Boris' Mongrel Hyundai
Alright, after being encouraged by "Bigreds WorkHorse Build" I decided to post the progression of "The Mongrel" ...... My Hyundai ............ Aiiiight ... STOP LAUGHING! I decided to call her a Mongrel because Hybrid sounds too clinical and who knows what parts are going to eventually have their way with her. Nobody chooses to tell you much about these carts ......(IE) Desk-Jockey @ LVS sales calls 'em boat-anchors ... lawn-ornaments and not one of the "Big 3".... "You can't get parts for them" Thats OK, he's in the business to sell parts .... not KNOW what fits what. Plus, I GET to fabricate the majority of the stuff that go onto her. I don't mind massaging her........... at all!
This is my first cart. .......... I've always worked on motorcycles, American Motorcycles, and this cart stuff is quite a diversion ...... The going manic part, has me by the short-hairs ....... But it's all good. I brought her home for $300 these are the first pics. Yeah, it was pointed out that it's a podunk trailer ....... AND? Back to the cart. No motor .... beat to sheeite and back. This was going to be a slam-bam, thank you Ma'am. Fix a couple of things drop in a motor ........ and ride ...... Yeah right. Then I took her top off and saw just how dirty this girl was All nice and shiny, but it was just the water ....... She had a bad case of cancer (rust) and years of rural North Florida farm-boy type of abuse heaped on her. Mud holes and stump jumping ....... stuff like that ....... No banjos I've since cut her to pieces and am slowly putting her back together with parts that many vendors told me would not work ....... Uh HUH? Thanks to all that have helped so far, those that will help, and those that are here allowing us newbies to pick their brains. To be continued ............ |

Re: Boris' Mongrel Hyundai
You mean like Honkie-tonk, podunk a dunk?
The dictionary says its a small town, regarded as typically dull, insignificant, etc. .........So when I added the work "trailer" to that, I figured the word spoke for itself. I'm glad the trailer did something for you. |

Re: Boris' Mongrel Hyundai
Boris...Rember the Hyundai was very simular to a Yamaha G2/G9 frame. Be very carefull about the rear "hub/drum" brakes .."splined axle shafts and soft drum splines"! Can't wait to see this build! What happened to your other extrme golf car build ? Dave

Are you talking about me trying to locate some of those swing-arm bushings? If so, I got tired of asking those desk-jockeys (parts dealers) to physically pull a bushing from off of the shelves and give me some numbers (specs) to see if what they had would work on mine ...... I ended up knocking the old steel sleeves out and simply left the rubber housings bushings in place. After milling a couple of oversized spacers and appying a generous coating of Liquid Nails, I mashed the new ones into place. That stuff is some wicked doo-doo. I'll snap some pics of those tomorrow. Now, lets talk about this Hub/Drum, splined shafts issue? I DID have trouble pulling the hubs in the manner they were designed to be taken off ....... LOL I ended up cutting two slots on both sides of the shaft to give it some relief from the years of corrosion, and not have to put any heat to that shaft in question. I then replaced them with the 24 spline hubs from an EZGO/Melex .. Same dogs as mine ........ I had to change the wheel studs to metric, but other than that, Its all good. Are they inferior axle-shafts? Latersville ... |
