MB523's 1977 EZGO
New to this fourm... figured I would make my first post here with pictures of my 1977 EZGO from start to finish. Enjoy:
This is the cart when I first got it home... It was a mess! It didn't run, was very dirty, gas was all jellied up, fuel pickup and fuel float was all rusted, fuel lines clogged and cracked, carb plugged, air filter full of dirt, very corroded battery, and a bloody mess of wires under the seat. A shot of the engine compartment... thats 8 years of dust covering almost 30 years of oily crud! This was supposed to be the fuel pickup!! It was replaced by a piece of fuel line going through a rather tight hole in the top. Sooo... to get it running! Was dry as a bone... 25LBS compression! Cleaned carb and introduced oil into the crankcase. Replaced battery and couldn't get it to crank. Starter was getting juice, but it wasn't going past the brushes. The 8 years of dust had coated the commuter nicely. I realized this after about 4 weeks of putting around with my new (old) $100 door stop, as dad called it. Sprayed some electric motor/brake cleaner on the commuter, let it dry, and she turned right over! Introduced fuel and she fired right up! Just in time for the 4th of July! Gave her a quick rattle can paint job and added some halogen headlights and red tail lights. Did I mention the previous owner jacked with the governor and it is no longer in existence. One of the seat backs was replaced with a different sized one, so I cut a piece of 3/4" plywood and found an old couch cushion. Cut it to fit and wrapped it in new seat covering. I also got an awesome deal on an open radio at best buy! I built a wooden box for it and mounted it in the dash. Speakers are 3-way indoor/outdoor mounted right behind the seat. (These pics are from a trip a friend of mine and I took up a snowmobile trail off our private access road to our camp. ) Mud is fun! Ran her everyday! With only 95LBS compression forward, 110 reverse! Needless to say, she was hurting and needed a rebuild, badly. Tore the engine apart and gave her some TLC. Found out the base gasket was leaking ALL summer... Top ring was in two when the cylinder came off. Piston burnt bad. Could be from no governor... Cleaned internal starter/alternator and installed new brushes Puttin her back together Shes done, painted flat heat resistant black. Fired right up, runs excellent! Here she is recently... we have a lot of snow! Looks like I am the first one with a pre-1980 EZGO here! I have been lurking and haven't seen any! Personally, I like the older EZGO's. They are all metal and built like tanks! I (we) beat the crap out of my cart this past summer, riding the trails (its stock!), moving wood ect., long trips, and just general cruising around. I am surprised the engine held up as long as it did! Hope I am not boring you guys! Mitch |
