Default First cart. 86 G1

I've been a member for a while now and have enjoyed reading and learning. I joined because I knew I was going to purchase a cart from my dad.

I made the purchase a few weeks ago and looked it over and while not a basket case it needs work. The rats or squirrels chewed a few wires but those will be easily fixed. I did a quick repair of them and put a good battery in and got it too start. It sounds good.

It does have the arms bent that go to the arms for the wheels but I'm going to build an A arm lift kit so that won't be a problem either.

I have one question to start out. I'm thinking of removing the oil injection system and running pre-mix. I wondered if anyone had changed from the vacuum fuel pump and installed a low pressure electric pump. I did this on a scooter I had once and actually gained a few mph.

Would there be any cons to the new pump?

I'm also looking for a decent tire/wheel combo but want to also stay on the cheap for my first build. Any ideas for a reasonable combo? I'd even go used if I can find a decent setup. Wanted to also say I'm going to build my lift at 4" and will be moving the front end forward while I'm at it.

Any help is appreciated.

Oh, wanted to mention that I gave $250 for the cart and the body is in fair shape. I did order a new ignition and need to either build a new panel for the ignition and choke or buy a replacement for the missing one.

I'll post pictures of the cart as I received it once I take some.

Thanks again and I look forward to learning more as I continue reading here.

I picked up a pipe bender and a notcher yesterday. I'm planning on making my own bumpers with a place for a winch on the front. I've been looking at tires and wheels on eBay and have a couple different sets I'm thinking about.

I am going to make my own lift and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for shocks I might use.

I've got pictures of the cart I'll post in a bit.

I haven't done anything yet with the cart. But I am still looking at wheels and tires. Not sure yet if I want to go with steel wheels or aluminum.

I did however pick up 4 front Honda 450 shocks off ebay. Got them for a total of $45 shipping and all.

Good luck with your rebuild. I did an extensive overhaul including rebuilding engine, new seats, new paint, sanded my finger prints off, muffler bbq, trim, and have applied everything I know about motors, engines, etc. I built and raced my own drag strip car and toured the country....all it takes is this G1 to drive me crazy. I'm sitting on $2000.00 worth of a no start p.o.s!! Wish you luck...the best advice I can give you is....run...to the nearest golf cart store and buy a new one.

Bodz, sorry to hear about the luck with yours. Luckily I know mine will at least start. LOL

I just pulled the trigger on a set of 22/10-10 AT tires and steel wheels. So now I'll get to build a lift kit using the above shocks to accomodate the tires.

From reading everyones posts on their own builds I've come up with a lot of ideas.

I'm looking forward to getting started on this build.

Mine will start, it's just hard starting and am threading about it now. My point is, it's always something...spend more time fixing it and rebuilding these ancient parts than you do enjoying it.

True Bodz, you need to enjoy wrenching, welding, sanding, wiring and especially cussing to really have fun with these old carts I guess. But it's the same with anything.

I bought a 96 Yamaha Wolverine 4x4 4 wheeler a couple years ago. Gave $400 for it. Replaced one front axle, both front driveline U-joints, all new bearings and seals in the rear end, new swing arm bushings and plastic welded a hole in the fuel tank.
I've enjoyed the quad for a couple years now with no problems. But now have the other front axle making noise, so time to start working on it again. But, I have the garage and time so no big deal to me.......... I like old things, especially if they are cheap and this cart was cheap.
