98 ez go solenoid problems

I'm new to the site and new to golf carts! I just bought a 98 ez go textron golf cart, we replaced the batteries and tried to start it up. It would not go so I did some looking and found the solenoid was hooked up backwards. I installed the new one and thought I had wired it up correctly but drove off and about a mile from the house it quit. I checked the solenoid and it was very hot and not making the clicking sound. I've looked at several wiring diagrams but I'm not sure what I'm missing. Any ideas on what to try next? Thanks

Re: 98 ez go solenoid problems

You are going to need a voltmeter if you don't have one and a little about how to use it. There should be two big wires connected to the big terminals. One goes straight to the battery positive and the other big terminal to the controller B+. A loose connection can cause heat. The high current flows through these big terminals when the solenoid makes the clicking sound it connects the battery + to the rest of the of the cart. I have no idea why your solenoid is getting hot but if it don't click you need to fix that first. When you get your voltmeter let us know and some of us will try to help you.

Thank you radioman. Do I need to replace the solenoid before I check it with the voltmeter? And everything is tight.

Leave everything as is. make sure all connections are tight. That is a new solenoid right? Will try to help you tomorrow.

A solenoid can't be hooked up backwards. The low current coil and the high current circuit don't care which way they're hooked up. The wires and diode could be criss-crossed, but the solenoids doesn't care.

1 Attachment(s)
Also need to know what drive system.
A 1998 TXT could be a Series drive or a DCS drive and the solenoid activation circuit is different of the different drives.

Be sure you are using a GC continuous duty solenoid of the proper amperage rating for your control.

And it is not a 12v.

It is a series drive and the solenoid is a white-Rodgers 71-111224-3 coil 12v D.C. Continuos. Btw my daughter would like to thank everyone for helping out this is her golf cart and she is ready to drive it.
