Project: Free Cushman
 

Since I like to talk, I'll start by telling a story. :mrgreen:

I've worked up at my church camp on a fellow's Cushman golf cart for the past couple years. He had a mess made of the wiring and I fixed that and put a solenoid on it for him one time, all free of charge. Just trying to help the guy out. He only charged the cart when he was at the camp, which is very little, and with a dinosaur old dial-timer charger with two screw in glass fuses. Oldest cart charger I've ever seen. Anyhow, he calls me up Saturday (yesterday) morning and says that he's at the camp, and he can't get his cart to run. (I wonder why???????) He says he's tired of messing with the old thing that has never run right for him and that he wants rid of it, and that if I want it I can come get it, he would leave the charger and key at my grandparents' cabin, because they're up there for a week or so. I offered to pay him, and he said no way, he just wanted me to have it and he was done with it. I got in the truck shortly thereafter and proceeded about two hours to the camp.

Here she is in all her glory, as she sat when I saw her for the first time again this year.

That's the only pic I have so far, I will get more. I need to figure out the terrible lean that it has, looks like a couple fat guys are always sitting on the driver's side. :lhmo: I think the rubber mount/bumper on that side is either broken or gone, and I know that the pivot point where the swingarm attaches is frozen up. Standing on the passenger side floorboard and leaning backwards out over the ground will easily pick the left rear tire up off the ground.

My plans are (so far): Clean it up and get it mechanically solid, which shouldn't take long. Put some batteries on it. Sell it. Free cart means room for profit, and I like profit. :wink:

Once it's up an running, you'll like it. You may even want to keep it. :mrgreen:

One small thing, the brake pedal isn't auto releasing when you press the go pedal. Too early in the game for that, but I figure I'd tell you anyway

Noooo, I already have a project like that which is moving waaaaay too slowly. :lol:

Thanks for the tip! I'd probably drive it around with the brake on wondering why it isn't moving fast enough. :oops: I did notice the brake automatically engages when the driver leaves the seat, that's kind of a neat feature.

It's alive!!! I jumped some power over from my tow rig/power supply/3 wheel awesomeness using the finest in ultra high power golf cart power transfer cables. :lol: Used a pair of vise grips to defeat the seat brake and the cart runs both directions! Need to adjust the speed wiper for full top contact coverage, but other than that it should run with a set of batteries.

The swingarm pivot isn't frozen like I thought, the body shear mount is just absolutely trashed on the driver's side. They're about $80 a side everywhere you can find them, but it looks like out sponsor Cart Sports has them for $44 a side. Going to be speaking to them today. More pics in the next post.

Here's the hitch picture. Looks like someone bubblegum welded in a cross member on the bumper brackets and then welded the hitch tube to that and the bumper. It's very sturdy, even with the ugly welds.
