Default E-Z-GO 1973 & 1985 Marathons

About 10 years ago, the local auto junkyard was shutting down. They had a pair of old Marathons that they used for parts runners. A 1985 and a 1973. Both were in operating condition. I made an offer and it was accepted.

I loaded them onto my trailer one by one and took them home. I had intended to restore them, but had not started on that. In 2013, thieves broke into my garage and butchered both carts in the process of ripping the batteries and wiring out for scrapping. On the 1973, they actually ripped out the F/R switch and speed control mechanisms. They busted batteries open during the process, battery acid was all over everything. I moved both carts outside to clean up the mess, and I hosed them off. I've been busy trying to replace other more important things that were stolen, so work on the carts was put on hold. They are still outside. Yesterday I went out to inspect both carts and the battery trays on the 1985 are mostly disintegrated from rust. The 1973 is not in such bad condition. The 1985 would require tearing down to the frame and require a lot of rust removal and replacement of at least the battery trays. I'll see if I can get some pics with my phone in the next day or two and post them here. I guess my question is, are these still worthy of restoring now?

This is the 1973 Marathon, front view then battery compartment view. The motor is covered with a plastic sheet. This one has the intact F/R switch and speed control board.

This is the 1985 Marathon. Front view and battery compartment view. This is the one that had the F/R switch and speed control ripped loose from.

I called about a motor for the 1973 Marathon and the guy I talked to wanted to see some pictures. So I removed the plastic and snapped a couple of pictures of the speed control board & F/R switch assembly, and the motor.

I somehow inverted the motor pic, right to left, when I cropped it. Here it is corrected. I noticed the wires to the resistor coils were on the wrong side. LOL

I really can't tell you if they are worth restoring or not, but if you were closer I could sure hook you up with a smooth operating resistor type three wheel marathon cheap. Picked it up locally cheap, but don't really need it.

When I got them, it was to save them from being crushed and put in with the rest of the vehicles being scrapped out. The owner of the auto salvage yard was shutting down and having every vehicle crushed and hauled off for scrap metal. I had considered restoring them, hence keeping them around. But after looking them over a few days ago, there just may be too much work involved to deal with all of the rust I'm finding on the frame around the battery compartments. The thieves busted the batteries open taking them out, spilling battery acid all over.

I am in the same boat. Too many projects, so little time! It is hard for me to turn down a cheap cart, even though I don't need anymore.

Not enough time always seems to be a problem. I have 8 older carts myself and have big plans in the future. I always feel I am saving them as well, silly me. No matter what I have I have fun with it and take care of it at the same time. It always amazed me how bad things can get and who let them get that way.

I could see myself needing intervention for cart hoarding! I pulling my boat to the river to do some fishing a while back. I noticed a cart, and a kid with a pair of wire cutters scrapping out the ezgo. Seems dad told him to do whatever he wanted with it. It was a pretty nice later marathon. $50 later I had me another cart. Just can't pass them up like that.
