Default Newbie Cushman owner needs help.

I picked up a 1973 Cushman car with Kohler 10hp gas engine and am trying to get her working so that I can drive around the neighborhood. The engine runs well but she seems to only grind when I try to put her in forward or reverse. I have no experience with this type of trans and clutch. Can someone steer me the right direction? If I had manual for this trans I am confident that my mechanic(al) skills will allow me to fix it - or figure out if it can be fixed, at least.
I'll take a couple of photos to post - maybe y'all can help me figure out what to do with this little beauty.

It sounds like your idle is set too high. Try adjusting it to a lower RPM. You also need to be at a complete stop before shifting. Hope this helps.

Catsailor...You should have an manual three speed. If so, these were the same ones used in the three wheel ice cream wagons of last decade (sort of speak) They are syncronized for shifting on the move. If you are getting grinding when trying to go into foward or reverse I would put basic mechanics to work and look at the clutch. It may just need adjusted, if it is worn too bad it may need replaced. The clutch disks are hard to find and generally go pricy on ebay. ( but I haven't looked for some time) Adjustment is a lot cheaper and easier to fix/elminate than the next step. If the pressure plate is touching the disk at all when the engine is running, it will turn the disk which in turn turns the input shaft of the tranny, and you get grinding. Some times you might get a slight lurch when you do get it in gear with the clutch out of adjustment. Try lengthing your clutch rod about one complete turn at a time. Get it close and then got to 1/2 turn at a time until you get it adjusted correctly.

Good luck and let us know.
