Re: electonic ignition for 18&22hp omc motors!
Velleman makes an electronic ignition "kit" that works for anything that has points. By kit I mean you actually have to solder it together yourself. I've used these before, they work pretty good. The thing is though it still uses the points to trigger BUT its a very small amount of voltage so the points don't get arced like they normally would.

Ive got 1 sitting here if you want it. $20. I can fit everything in a bubble wrap envelope.
Check out the PDF on it first to see if you think you can do it. Theres no surface mount parts, all through hole. |

if points are set up properly...the points cam is lubed....and contacts of points touch nice and flat....i've had no issues with any points in any vehicle. All those extra bucks can go for more liquid refreshment! ;)

Re: electonic ignition for 18&22hp omc motors!
electrical stuff isn't my strong point but it looks straight forward enough.Any problems with vibration rattlen soldier loose?I put new points(.20 gap) and condenser with 2 old ford coils and chrysler resistor in it, and in under an hour it ate a set of points...mostly at over 1500 rpm(floods at idle).I still haven't touched the motor other than maken sure it runs...I'm getting ahead of myself...I still have to replace ALL the major brake components, but I'm interested in the kit(if nothen else I can have one of my buds help me with it) if you still have it in a couple weeks.

Re: electonic ignition for 18&22hp omc motors!
I bought a truckster OMC 22hp sight unseen, Not a good deal, got it running, barely, ran like crap. I did buy a Velleman igniton kit, installed it and it is now running much much better. I have a broken spring on the timing advance weight, I put a tie tie on the weights to hold them together. How important is the timing advance on this motor and if it is important where can I get a set of springs that will work? If its not real important, I'll leave the tie tie on the weights
thanks vEEEEk |
