cushman truckster valve noise

I have cushman truckster 3 wheeler with a OMC twin .The truck runs great except for when you shut it off you hear a clanking sound coming from the right side valve cover. It has always done this and I have never worried about it, But now the clanking sound pops up and is very loud sometimes when it is running. Is this a valve adjustment problem? any thoughts?

possibly but unlikely if the sound comes and goes...it is most likely a lifter "ticking". It wouldn't hurt to take valve cover off, check valve clearance and if OK...remove rocker shaft and look for wear on shaft where the rockers pivot, and check adjusting screw tips where they fit into pushrods and check each end of pushrod for wear. Valve clearance is .005" on both intake and exhaust

The clearances were a tad loose, I tightened them to .005". the rattle is still there. It seems to go away at 1000-2000 rpm but once I let off the throttle it comes back.I'll try taking off the rocker shaft next and inspect.
