Default Caroche Club Car early 70's... Brakes, help.

Hello all,

Please, please help! lol...

I have been repairing autos for close to 30 years, so I have a little understanding but really need some assistance on this Club Car. I have never messed with one before.

I am trying to repair a relatives brakes on her Club Car. It only has rear hydraulic brakes. It has the three pedals, power, brake and hill brake.

When I removed the drivers side rear tire most of the brake system had been removed, only the base plate was left with the hill brake cable hanging. The brake line for the drivers side had been pinched off.

Also the wheel cylinder on the passenger side doesn't look right for anything I have seen online for it. I will need driver and passenger sides wheel cylinders. I think I can pretty much find the spring set, wheel cylinders, and brake shoes but the only drum I found was for the years 71-73 and not quite the same. So I am having difficulties finding the correct drum for the drivers side. I have the passenger side drum, so I would only need the drivers side drum.

It looks as if someone rigged the brakes. The bottom of the pads fit into a bracket also which is strange to me... I am trying hard to do it right...

I looked for the serial but I couldn't find it anywhere, I saw online to look under the seat. I checked everywhere under the seat and couldn't locate the serial for it. From what I can tell it looks like this Club Car is early 70's, correct me if I am wrong please. When I find the brake shoe it says pre 1974, so that is what I am going by...

I have been searching for three days, lol... I have some pictures of what I am working with any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edited: Now I just found a picture of a 1971 Caroche Club Car in another thread and due to the way the shifter and center molding around and below the shifter, plus where the charger is located below the driver seat I believe this one is a 1971 model also...

Link

Thanks.
Terry

Wow! Welcome to BGW Terry. Some of the guys will be along to help with what they know.
You could call Tom at CPP, http://www.cartpartsplus.com/ I know he re-did a gas Caroche a while back and could probly get your parts identified and get them for you.

Good luck Terry

Hello essness,

Thank you for the warm welcome. During my research I found that whenever I saw really good information about these club cars online it was always a post from these forums. As a matter of fact I didn't even know that the pictures I had found of the '71 was from here. I wasn't going to add the link because I thought it was from another forum and some websites don't allow that but when I went back to the page to get more details I saw that it was from these forums also.

These seem to be pretty awesome golf cars, I had no idea that you could do so much to them. I tried to add as much information as I could find about hers, so I hope that helps. This club car is in pretty good condition, less the braking system. She uses it for her daughter and grandchild on her 4 acres and a little work also. It might even see a golf course, if I can get it right...

I really should have brought it back to my house, so I could do the work but I am trying to keep it simple for her. She is a very generous aunt and has helped me out a lot over the years. I didn't want her to think it was too big of an issue so that she doesn't try to go overboard on paying me for doing it.

I may still bring it over here because I am thinking that it could use the work since it is going to be used for my cousins little girl and I want to be absolutely sure it's right. Give the whole car a good going over, cleaning and wax...

I was able to find the serial #, actually my aunt was the one to find it and called me with it.

It is K2830

I found that it is a Resort Villager Electric Utility Vehicle but I didn't see what year it is? Do I go by the 83 in the serial for the year?

What is strange is that the serial was located below the glove compartment but the car has two brake pedals and a accelerator pedal?

I am thinking she read the 2 wrong in the serial and it must have been a 7 making the serial K7830. Making it a 1978 car but why would the serial be below the glove box then as it is in earlier models? I have to drive to my aunts house to check on this stuff and it is more than a few miles away. So it will be a day or two before I get more info...

Thanks Joe for the welcome, I appreciate it. You have a nice car and I like you old gas pump too, makes the picture that much better....

Hey Terry,
I am also new to this forum and also have an unknown year Caroche with brake issues.Mine has a problem with the pedal assembly. When your press any one of the pedal they all depress. Does yours do this as well? I will keep an eye out for your future posts/replies but am wondering if we are close to each other in Fla. I am on Pine Island, near Ft Myers/Cape Coral. I'd love to commiserate with you about your experiences with your project. I also don't have any brakes but I think my brake system is a little more in place than yours seemed. Best of luck with your project and lets keep in touch... Charles

I think that your pedals are just froze up on the shaft that they ride on. Try to get some liquid wrench, spray the ends that are riding on the shaft and try to work the pedals against each other to break them loose. I would bet they are frozen up with rust on that shaft...

Good luck...

Kind of strange that no one else really had any info on this brake system, kind of a quiet thread...

This cart has me up in arms... The serial was correct, K2830? It is a pre 1974 club car with the serial beneath the glove box? All of the parts for the brakes are pre 1974... I have found just about all the parts I will need, neighbor of my aunts actually had the drivers side drum, thankfully. I will have to see if he has the bottom brake shoe bracket for the drivers side also. I can't locate it online for the life of me, lol. I believe it is the only part I am lacking now, once I get the others online...

Any help locating this online would be much appreciated, it is the part at the lower side of the back plate in this picture where the bottom of the brake shoes sit against...

Thanks.
Terry

Parts I could find...

I haver already sprayed it down with blaster but it still is somewhst stuck. If I hold the brake pedal it will move independently of the gas butnot of the hill brake. if not being held it all moves together. I also need to change the master cylinder and brake lines and get the steering worked out. Do you know if the steering can be rebuilt or do I need a new steering box. I found a steering kit for dsale with races and bearings and am wondering if I can rebuild instead of replace ??? any knowhow is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If I am not mistaken and anyone can chime in and correct me if I am but I believe that the hill brake is welded solid to the shaft and that the brake and throttle are both riding independent on the shaft. The hill brake will control the cable that goes back to the brake system itself, like an emergency brake on autos... I believe the cable is on the opposite far end of the same shaft...

It might be a lot of spraying and levering to get the brake and throttle loose from the shaft... Work both against the hill brake to break them loose of the main shaft... Hope this helps.

I had to do this on two riding mowers once, it took a lot of effort and time on my part but once it was broken loose and was able to work easily, the mowers worked like brand new. I bought two riders for $200 and turned around and sold just one of them for $300, not only making my cash back but a profit of $100 and one mower for free for me to use on my own yard...

As far as the steering I have no idea, hopefully someone else can give you more info on it. Good luck...
