Default Precedent/LSV tag in Georgia?

Hi all,

Hope I'm posting in the right place, I've searched the forums to no avail finding a specific answer to my question(s).

About a month ago, we purchased our '07 Precedent. It already had the rear seat kit, head/tail lights and aftermarket wheels. I've since put the HD rear leafs and a battery gauge on it.

We love it and intend to use it a fair bit going camping, however we mostly camp at the Army Corps campgrounds around Allatoona Lake and we also have a boat in a slip ~1mi from our house (35mph speed limit roads).

Army Corp doesn't allow "golf carts" though I'm sure if I had a Georgia LSV tag I could argue this point (they do allow "street legal" vehicles).

Also the cart dealer told us "Oh, you can use it legally on any road with a 35mph or less speed limit" which of course is not the case anymore (wouldn't have affected my purchase, and my fault for not doing my research ahead of time). So, that makes driving down to our boat sort of dicey.

Has anyone run through the process of getting a VIN number assigned to a cart that has been converted to meet the safety specs? I've seen a few carts at our boat slip parking lot but everyone seems to just be operating them illegally with the exception of the Tomberlin's that come titled as an LSV.

I called my county Tax Commissioner (we're in Cherokee) and they basically said if it wasn't already titled/had a VIN, they wouldn't assign one and we were more or less dead in the water but I know that can't be the case (ala kit cars not built on an existing chassis with a VIN).

We don't have all of the safety items yet (strobe light [I have the permit information for that], LSV triangle, turn signals/horn) but I obviously didn't want to spend all that money if it was fruitless.

Thanks in advance!

Forgot to mention, I GPS clocked my cart at ~20-21mph on a flat... Not sure if the speed code was changed or if they swapped the magnet - there is a Speedy Link zip tied to my motor harness but it is not connected (odd). Willing to listen to any way to tell :)

My research concludes there is no way to do this in Ga. You can put all the LSV equipment on a golf cart and you can modify them for speed but you can't get around the VIN problem.
The local counties/municipalities can establish rules for golf carts as long as they aren't less restrictive than the FEDs. This has been done in some places, notably Peachtree City. Carts here can be driven on 35mph roads even without LSV equipment. Here are the rules if your interested: http://peachtree-city.org/index.aspx?NID=216
Both EZGO and Club Car make an LSV. The EZGO is called a 2five. The CC one is called a Villager but watch out because CC has used the "villager" name on regular golf carts also. Maybe you could keep an eye out for a used one. I don't think the market price would be much more than a golf cart but they will be rare.

Not the answer you wanted I know.

Not really, but thanks anyway kernal. Since we're well outside of PTC, doesn't help me too much. Roswell even has regulations/permitting for carts but the only answer I've received here is "no".

Don't really want to start all over since we just bought the Precedent, kicking myself for not doing my research sooner, I would've just bought a Tomberlin or something I knew had a VIN already but silly me I trusted the dealer.

State law allows use with their safety requirements, hip restraints, reverse buzzer, slow moving vehicle triangle, orange strobe, lights, etc.

From there it is dependent on the local municipality whether they adopt the ordinance or not.

I haven't tried the factory directly but I did speak to a Club Car dealer - their explanation is that a Precedent like I have was never delivered with an MSO or VIN since (their words) they are "built differently" than an LSV. I think that's nonsense other than the safety equipment, otherwise the conversions wouldn't be possible but perhaps I will try Club Car directly.

Thanks!

Finally got around to calling Club Car.. They actually have an option on their phone tree for a "used car MSO". Spoke with a nice lady named Denise (I believe she's the only one that does them). She's sending me an MSO "letter" which she reports in addition to a bill of sale is sufficient in GA to get a title.

She also is going to try and get the original MSO sent to me, however for that to happen it has to go from Club Car to the original purchaser (a dealer in Waynesboro, GA) who has to sign it off that it was sold to me (which of course, they were not the ones who sold it to me - I believe it was sold by them to an individual who traded it in at the dealer I purchased it from... And of course that's the shortest possible path, it may be much worse than that).

So, we'll see what shows up in the mail and what the County Tag Office tells me when I go in and try and title/tag it. :)

I know this is old, but the answer short answer is simply no. You won't get a title in GA. GA law states that no golf cart, atv, side by side, etc etc can have a title, period. Only if it was manufactured and certified as an LSV with VIN and title can it be tagged and titled in GA. That being said, GA law does allow for the use of golf carts on roads with speed limits under 35mph with proper safety equipment. Now, that isn't to say that a cop on a vendetta won't harass you. My advice is simply operate it safely, stay out of the way, don't hold up traffic and don't do anything stupid. Then you should never have an issue. I had a Yamaha Grizzly ATV on the north side of Atlanta and my jerkoff neighbors used to call the police everytime I rode it. They'd show up and say that isn't illegal and leave. Many times I had quite pleasant conversations with the officers about ATV"s. I also have a cart that I use in my neighborhood for my wife and kids to travel to and from the pool. It's never caused an issue.

All that being said, the corps is a different animal. They typically won't allow carts or atv's or anything unless you have a handicapped person requiring the assistance of a motorized vehicle. And that person is supposed to be in it at all times it is in use on corps property. My brother in laws father had a gator on lake lanier for that purpose and when he died, they said no more gator.

Why not just go to a custom cart builder and see if he has a vin sticker you can buy? It's not like it's a big deal....
