Bagged, chopped, stretched Model A inspired 78 club car rat rod
A few of my friends wanted to build "rat rod" carts. What did they do? Slap on some flat black primer and red wheels. That isn't a rat in my book. So I thought I'd raise the bar a little.
My plan is to use my 78 club car body on a custom chassis. Ezgo leaf spring/solid axle front suspension and a killer looking rear end with a drum brake attacked to the motor. I'm going to run 3 12v batteries up front so I can sit as low as possible to maximize the chop. I plan on sitting where the batteries used to. Going to make a custom battery mount to make them resemble a big *** engine. As of now I have amassed all the parts and have started mock up on the chassis. Here are a few pics of the mock up stage. |

The chassis will be made of mostly 2x2 .250 wall steel. I'm using the thick wall because I plan on using the chassis as the air tank for the rear suspension. I'm going to use the same steel to make a drop axle for the front.

Thanks smoke. Yep it's a 63. Can't wait to get those flames off the side of it.

Ordered my wheels last night. 12x4 smoothies, going to run 4.80 in front and 5.30 in the back. Bias ply for that "period correct" look. I also scored a killer grill off a 72 Sears mower.

one minor thought , you could get a whole lithium pack and hide it under a fake engine instead of the limits of the 3 batteries

I have something real cool planned for the paint. There is a paint with iron oxide mixed in with it. After a couple coats you apply an activator to and it will rust. Not something that looks like rust but actual rust. I experimented with it on a plastic flower pot of the wifes and it looks tough. Got a little carried away with the activator and covered up to much black but I still love it. The way I figure it I'll have the only rusted out fiberglass body around. Here a pic of the sample.

I considered making it fast but I'm unsure if the motor and electronics off my donor cart will hold up. Instead of the motor sitting horizontal I'm going to install it vertically so you can see it move with the suspension and I pretty sure it'll look cool.
