Federal Safety Label
Hello everyone. First wanted to say great forum here, I've learned so much just lurking around for some time now. I recently purchased a 2006 Precedent for a deal I couldn't refuse (my buddy runs a couple golf courses and one shut down). Done a ton of research on street legalizing in California and it's definitely a pita. Not giving up though.
I haven't seen any posts for a while on any successful Ca. registrations. Don't really want to pay someone in So.Cal. to do it for me, I don't mind doing the research. BUT... The CHP has been pretty cool so far saying they should be able to give me a blue tag for VIN for the DMV after I do the standard street legal mods(lights, horn, mirrors, etc.). It seems my main hurdle at this point is the DMV(shocker I know). I went in, and the guy at the front told me nothing can be done without a "Federal Safety Label" that comes on vehicles from the factory. Well, I'm pretty sure golf carts don't have those labels. The guy seemed to think he knew more than I think he really knows. I think I was assuming when the CHP signs off on it, it would cover FMVSS, saying it is safe to drive on the road (25mph roads). Let me know if anyone has registered lately and has any tips for me. BTW, this is in the small town of Capitola, not near a golf course, if that helps. Thanks in advance, and let me know if this post needs to be in a different section. -Larry |

Re: Federal Safety Label
Golf carts by definition are exempt from FMVHSS if they are limited to 15mph but then it cannot be an NEV because it needs to go 20mph. That is what the CA DMV told me. It is a catch-22. I gave up after wasting so much time. I hope you find a better answer.

I've seen more custom cars from California --- how do they get them registered? How would you go about registering a Kit Car? I'd put some hi speed gears in it -- get it to go as fast as possible. Then apply for a vin number for a homemade car.

Re: Federal Safety Label
Are we talking about a gas or electric cart? 2006 so its really new looking. The one thing I learned being from NY -- It's not a golf cart -- It's a UTV. I've done enough work on my old girl that it no longer looks like a golf cart. When you talk to the dmv -- don't use the term "golf cart"

Re: Federal Safety Label
You would think as greedy [taxes] as NY and California are that there would be an easy way to license our personal vehicles. I'm handicapped - old and hard to get in and out of a car. The little car is easier to get in and out of, lower to the ground.

Totally agree with the usefulness of golf carts on neighborhood streets. So much easier and infinitely more efficient than a bigger vehicle with a gas engine. I'm still gathering data but last week I drove my cart all over my neighborhood for 25 cents. |

Re: Federal Safety Label
It is electric. I understand it would be fine if I leave it stock (<15mph) and wouldn't have to get it registered, but I don't live close to a golf course so that's a scratch.
If I want to go 20+ I understand its no longer a golf cart and has to adhere to FMVSS. Is it then a NEV? I know it a golf cart can't be turned into a LSV. Gregorio, how are you driving yours around your neighborhood? Are you near a golf course? |
