How much does it cost to drive a golf cart?
I was told that it costs about 1 penny per mile to drive a golf cart. Has anyone actually measured this? I wonder how much power the charger draws when the batteries are full? I know my desktop computer costs around $10/mo to leave on 24X7. How much does it cost to leave the cart plugged in?

I'll have to agree with Chevy. If you have to worry about gas mileage on your car, you don't need the car, RV, truck, or whatever you are checking mileage on.
I'm just yanking your string. I know you are just being curious. |

Re: How much does it cost to drive a golf cart?
there is a lot of variables to this question... first of all how much does your power company charge you for power in kilowatts...next, how good is the battery pack?..
what kind of charger are you using.. how old..and so on....so asking that question is like asking us what your stove is costing you to operate.... with no details..and yes it does cost to keep the charger plugged up all the time .. it cost more when it is in use then when at idle.. |

Re: How much does it cost to drive a golf cart?
I don't think its that hard of a question I'm not looking for exact numbers just want someone who has actually measured AC usage. Has anybody ever plugged their cart into a kil-a-watt? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...nal-_-82715001. I think i'm at .10 kwh, barring any surcharges.
And yes, I am cheap. |

Re: How much does it cost to drive a golf cart?
It IS a interesting question, just too many varibles. So far for the miles traveled on my used cart so far, and what I payed for it, time I already have in it, and the parts on order, plus the new batteries needed.......dude I am screwed !

Re: How much does it cost to drive a golf cart?
No. Not yet. The wait is killing me. It's like a 3 month prom night. Hopefully, it'll end better this time
I'm really interested in the break even costs for day to day use. Money spent.. well... it's already gone. can't do nothing about it now. I'd like to fool myself (and the wife) into thinking the dang thing will pay for itself. I want to campare the operating costs to my truck. Of course, I'm not getting rid of the truck, so fixed costs will remain the same. As a baseline, my truck gets 16mpg. With gas @ 2.50, each mile costs 15.6cents. The NEV has an additional insurance expense of ~20/month. My goal is to save 20.00/month driving the NEV. If it's true that each NEV mile cost .01, then by driving a NEV, I save 14.6cents per mile. For me to save 20.00/month I have to drive the NEV 136 miles per month to save 20.00. |

Re: How much does it cost to drive a golf cart?
If you are talking strictly fuel cost for electricity it is very easy to figure it out. All you need to know is the efficiency of the motor in watt hours/mile.
Here is a real life example with a really nice golf cart called the Tesla Roadster. It has an efficiency of 150 wh/mile. From that all you need to know is the price of electricity. In my nick of the woods electricity cost 9.6 cents per Kwh. So the Tesla gets 1000 wh / 150 wh / mile or 6.667 miles to the Kwh. A Kwh cost 9.6 cents right? 9.6 cents / 6.667 miles = 1.4 cents per mile. Here is the bad news. Your golf cart efficiency suks compared to the Tesla at 200 wh /mile. More insult to injury the Tesla can go from 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds, top speed of 120 Mph, and a 250 mile range. And from what I seen around here the Tesla cost less than some of the buggies I see on here. |

Re: How much does it cost to drive a golf cart?
I always figure it will cost you about a $1 per hour to charge, from what the charger pulls, if you got the NEV to try and save money, then you may have made a bad choice. If you got it so that you enjoy the lifestyle of the golf cart and using around the neighborhood, trails and the beach, like Port A, then you will enjoy it. Most people here did not get there carts to worry about what you are concerned with, though I do understand your concerns and what you are getting at. Hope you get the cart and that the tax law does not bite, wait and see.
