Default from 12:1 to 6:1 gears..

ok guys, my AC cart can go 29 mph with 12:1 gears and stock tires...im wanting more speed now...who woulda thought???

ive used the "speed calculator" and it says that if I put 6:1 gears in it then the cart would go 59 mph....This may be correct on "paper" but in the real world.....im not feeling as if my cart would be going literally twice as fast as what it was, even though I would be putting gears in it that have half as many teeth.

so the question I am asking is, who has done a 6:1 gear ratio and what did they get out of them??

thanks, and feel free to say what some 8:1 gears got you as well...I tried searching but got nothing back when I searched "8:1" or "6:1"

thanks again

Yes on paper that looks like it should be your top speed. But you have to think about how much your cart weights and how long it would take to get to that speed and If you want to turn ( you wouldn't be able to turn at 40+ mph in a golf cart.)

I would talk to Garage Built since that is what kind of gearing he was running in his drag cart at Buggie Bonanza last year.

ya, i talked to him a bit last year when i went and visited him....hes only a 30 minute drive from me....I dont think it would take too long to get there with the motor that I have. Itll chirp the tires on pavement and in gravel you can spin em if you floor it going about 10 mph....ive got the torque. stopping would also be a new story, but that is easily solved with disk brakes. I was just wondering what 6:1s would actually do before I spent money on the brakes and then on the gears and not get what I was expecting.

You will lose torque but gain top end. Also spinning the tires and such what is the ramp up set to in your controller?

Are you doing long distance driving? Stop and go? If you were down in South Carolina where you can drive them on the road then I would go with the taller gear set bc you are going for a long distance. And the speed would help ya out.

So what is your application for this cart?

its just my cruisin cart....no real application. it would chirp the tires and spin them in gravel with the controller settings set on factory. i know i would lose low end...thats w hy i said that I have enough to sacrifice.

if you are just cruising and not pulling a boat or going mt climbing I say go for it.

did you get the 1236 curtis or the 1238 with your ac motor?

Plus the disc brakes are a plus either if you do or don't add the gears.

is this your model number 1238-65XX
if it is, that controller is a 48- 80v 550 amps
If not then you got the 1238-56XX
which is 36-48v and 650 amps
