Street legal ds needs more speed!!!
Ok sorry in advance to those who think this has been beaten to death... But I have recently converted my 94 ds 36v to street legal and have decided I need more speed. It is a resistor cart and has the special service 2.97 hp motor. I want to relocate the coil to the side and fab a bracket to hold 2 extra 6 volts where the coil was. I already know that I will need a 48v solenoid and a different charging method and in different threads I have seen mixed reviews on keeping the coil or converting to controller. I would really like to keep the coil if anyway possible (funding purposes). Also, any other reliable and inexpensive upgrades are not out of the question. Any input is appreciated!!!

Re: Street legal ds needs more speed!!!
Ok I just found out that I need to have a min of 20 mph to get a lsv permit here in tn. So whats the best way to get my cart up to speed. I'm currently at 13 mph so I have some way to go.

Re: Street legal ds needs more speed!!!
keep the 36V motor, add batteries and a charger to get to 48v, lose the resistors and get a solid state controller. that should get you close to 20. are you planning on adding larger diameter tires? if so, you should be good to go.

Re: Street legal ds needs more speed!!!
Thanks sj. I was leaning toward solid state eventually but will the resistors work for now? I'm sure they would get too hot at part throttle but at wot they are bypassed anyway??? And about the tires, I would like to keep the factory 18's bc I'd like to still be able to golf with it but would you recommend a gear ratio change?

Re: Street legal ds needs more speed!!!
the resistors might work... hi power motor, increased voltage, & gears is definitely pushing your luck. do you plan on golfing at full throttle?
you should be able to go with a slightly larger tire and remain course compliant. gears will definitely get you some top end. just keep in mind the increased load. -sj |

Re: Street legal ds needs more speed!!!
Well I'm not a very lucky guy, but I do seem to push my luck quite frequently!! And at my cc you need speed. There is always some Jimmy trying to get 18 holes in an hour and will not wait for you to move!!!
I finished my battery tray yesterday and plan on getting the batteries on Monday. After playing with the speed calculator I estimated that if I can maintain my current rpm (after voltage increase of course) with 8:1 gears and increase to 20" tires I'll get 23mph! Which is exactly where I need to be. See how that works out in real world |

Re: Street legal ds needs more speed!!!
Unfortunately, In the real world your cart is going to have a melt down on 48 volts without a proper conversion to solid state speed control.
You are courting disaster adding voltage to a resistor coil cart. Here are some pics of what is going to happen to the V-glide and resistor coils. I hope this helps... |
