New rat rod project!!!
For those that have followed my Cougar Scooter project, you'll appreciate this. After helping work on my cart, some of my friends have been bitten by the bug.
My buddy Alex found a piece of crap ezgo marathon for $60 on Craigslist, and that's where we start. We went through some design ideas, first thinking that a woody would be cool. This concept involved putting a golf cart rear in reverse over the front heels and building a wooden rear.
ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1409923583.211849.jpg Then Alex found a 1940's Oliver tractor grill and hood for cheap on eBay, so the design centered around that. ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1409923640.708867.jpg In the rear are lawn mower seats with belts for the kids. Tear down began. This metal hoop used as a holding rail for the rear facing seats was to be reused as a front suspension mount. ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1409923809.894790.jpg Next the idea was to take the front suspension and lengthen it using leaf springs from an f150. The hoop was centered on the frame and mounted to the cart.
ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1409923889.999735.jpg We then welded gussets for strength. ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1409923932.045092.jpg Here's a view of the tractor grill we planned to use. We also found Harley Davidson headlights and blinkers to use at a yard sale. ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1409923968.513936.jpg Everything was sandblasted and painted satin black. ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1409924015.352708.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1409924110.127834.jpg The tires are for a trailer, found at a swap meet. The grille and lights are just resting there to see how it would look. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

A few more of how it looked at this point. I'm sad that I didn't get the pics of the Mercedes struts that we got for free that mounted perfectly for stability.

Alex bought a running and driving Western, so he put all of his time effort, and money into that. His wife started to pressure him into getting rid of the rat rod, but he didn't want to give it to just anyone. The cart sat for a year and eventually his wife wanted to convert the garage into an office. The cart had to go. Enter our friend TJ. TJ is a welder by trade and a heck of a hot rodder. He drives a dodge ram quad cab that he lifted by himself in his driveway, and his last cart project turned out awesome. Here is the "Green Goblin" next to the "Cougar Scooter". ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1409924473.574001.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalkHD1409924511.796921.jpg TJ lowered it, painted it, added a train horn, 650 amp alltrax, plum quick motor, and a 6:1 rear. It topped out at 38 with both of us in it at 42v. Alex bequeathed the rat rod to TJ as he sold his old cart and needed a project. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

Once TJ got a hold of it, it went into overdrive. He took out the leaf springs and struts in favor of fabricating a four link. The idea is that he wants to use airbags to raise and lower it, with flint blocks underneath to spark when he drops it to the ground.

Originally he was going to go with an ATV gas motor, but since found an electric cart for cheap with all the goodies- forward/reverse switch, solenoid, controller, motor, good brakes, etc. He has since cut the cart in half to lengthen the body so that the driver can sit low. It is quite possible a roof will go on. Will have to do another drawing! More to come... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |
