Sportworks 650 UTV engine swap project
Hello, long time lurker, first time poster - here are some pics of an engine swap in a UTV I picked up cheap with a blown engine. Much information on this site has helped me over some hurdles! Thought least I could do is show some pictures of progress thus far. Feel free to ask any questions, hoping to be help to others considering an engine swap. Engine is a Predator 670 at the moment, working on tuning the clutch and replacing the gear set in the transaxle.
Enjoy |

Few pictures of the carnage of the engine as delivered. Nice engine, but it ate the air cleaner screws, and really messed up the heads and pistons. Such a shame with only 338 hours. This is what prompted this swap.

Re: Sportworks 650 UTV engine swap project
Just to share, for anyone new to CVT driver/driven clutch setups, or anyone going through the daunting task of tuning the shift curve, factoring in a different powerband and "drivability profile", I found some good (FREE!) technical info here: https://web.wpi.edu/Pubs/E-project/A...ited_Jan19.pdf
A long read, but well worth it. Also Olav Aaen's Clutch Tuning Handbook has been VERY helpful for me as I am new to CVT transmissions. Not sure where to buy it but it can be found online in pdf format. Goes over all the details of the CVT and how to tune it. Mostly covers the P85 style clutches, but the theory applies to any Comet, Yamaha, Polaris, CVTech setup. |

I was thinking of doing this. Are you happy with the engine? Was it difficult with the amount of room? Thanks John

Re: Sportworks 650 UTV engine swap project
Yes, it has been running great. It was pretty easy, I needed to drill new mount holes as the PTO has more offset on the P670, so I nudged it over about 1/2" to the passenger side, to get the CVT belt in perfect alignment, but was pretty much a bolt in deal. If you go the beefed up route you may want to put a lighter clutch spring in the primary to load the engine more, it will engage at a higher RPM since the motor has more torque with the stock spring. Plenty of room in there. I will be swapping in a larger Kohler 725 in the next couple of weeks, which is an even larger engine.

Some pictures of the clutch cleaning/tuning process, and the ring and pinion swap in the transaxle. It's been quite a learning experience to tweak the drivability profile on this thing. So much fun out on the trails. We have had it over 40mph (gps) so far without really trying, so eventually I need to tune the suspension and brakes, gets pretty bumpy!

Re: Sportworks 650 UTV engine swap project
Here is a peak at the roller Kohler going in it next, to take it to the next level. Will be a 10.5:1 all forged, billet rods with roller valvetrain, and a Mikuni flat slide. I wanted to warm the 670 over a bit more, but there is not enough demand for performance parts yet, so the Kohler should provide more power in a reliable package.
