Excuse my ignorance, but, I've read a few threads and I can't figure out how to measure the balance shaft and camshaft end play. Could someone point me in the right direction? My motor is a bit noisy and I want to quieten it down the best I can (420 not 460). I'm already planning for roller rockers and upgraded pushrods.

I did my mock up build down the cylinder bore without the connecting rod and piston for the cam and balance shafts. Some of the pro use a trashed side cover with a cut out for measurement. The crank can be measured externally.

You can measure the cam and balance shaft end play through the crankshaft hole in the side case. The cut up side case is a perfect way to clearance a block for obstructions -- but would you trust the end play numbers?

Where are you guys sourcing crankshaft shims? What side of the crank is best to shim?

Crankshaft shims are available from NR racing, shim the pto / output side/ side cover side of the crankshaft. The balance shaft and cam shaft get shimmed on the flywheel/ crank case side. The balance shaft and cam shaft take the same size shins. 5/8” gun barrel shins work or you can order a 19 pc assortment of 5/8 arbor shims off Amazon. McMaster Carr also carries them...

I found the 5/8 " shims on the balance shaft way too sloppy a fit. It mikes out @ .575" or 15mm. The only shims I could find were 15.19 mm units from Mcmaster Carr. Those ended up fitting the balance shaft perfectly.
