Nope, your description of the pipe is right. That "end" is common on modern equipment as it keeps the rain out and does not wear and rattle like a rain cap. If you have choice when replacing, aim it forward or at a 45 degree away from the operators station to reduce the drivers noise. Look for a Nelson muffler for your hoe. They supply most of original equipment manufacturers, excellent quality, and the last time I checked, made in USA.
