vanguard briggs 18hp idle problem

hi all,

i have had an 18hp in my DS for awhile and it has never idled right any help would be great.... if i idle it up where it will stay running i cant put it in gear? when its down low it only runs for a couple seconds then stalls

I'm no expert, but I'd have to think your drive belt is to tight. Get the number off your drive belt, maybe a picture or video of your set up and post it. A call to Tom at CPP (site sponsor) would help also. He is the "BigBlock Guru"

ok i just went thu the carb everything looks good and clean, took it apart blew it out put it back on same thing. i cant keep it idling under 1500rpm which is to high to put in gear. im going to try n get some pics of the set up i didnt think the belt was to tight but i dont really no what to tight is either

Motor should idle below 1500 all day long. I once forgot and left my wifes big block idle for 3 hours, never missed a beat. I usually set at 1000-1100 rpm either the mixture screw needs tweaked or idle passage is still blocked. When setting idle make sure you set it with the idle speed screw and leave a little slack in the cable.

My 18 vanguard idles at 990-1000 rpm.
