Scratch that. Looking at your photos, it appears one side of the ammeter IS grounded.

The chassis and primary side is grounded via the AC power cord, but the secondary is isolated from ground. Grated, one ammeter post is electrically connected to the metal plate it is mounted on, but that metal plate (Heat sink) is isolated from the chassis by the non-conductive stand-offs that hold it in place. The cathodes of the diodes are connected to the heat sink, so the heat sink is the source for the B+ (positive DC output). Note that the Red wire to the control board is attached to the heat sink. The other ammeter post goes through a larger hole that has an insulator in it, so it isn't directly connected to the heat sink and that is where the white wire (Positive DC output) in the output cable attaches, via 50A fuse. But it is directly connected in the photo. The loose Black wire shown in first and last photo is the Negative DC output and should be connected to the two white wires coming out of transformer secondary. The fuse can be placed in either the Positive or Negative DC output path. -------------- Since the cart has been eliminated as the problem source, we are down to just two possibilities. 1. Bad diode(s) 2. Short between Positive and Negative DC output current paths. ------------- Considering that at least two 50A fuses have blown and the current has to pass through the 35A rated diodes, I suspect the diodes need to be replaced even if they were not the root cause of the fuses blowing, |

Johnnie,When we took the cover off of the charger there is a white wire to one post on the amp meter the other post had nothing connected to it,is this correct?

Johnnie,Transformer is shorted,where would I get one? Do you have a part #? Is it worth fixing or should we look at DPI charger like ScottyB sells? Thanks for your help!

Just curious, but how did you determine the transformer is shorted?
Any of the four sets of windings will only measure a few Ohms on an Ohmmeter. The transformer can be replaced, but it is not economically feasible to do so since it costs almost the same as the entire charger and more that a DPI from Scotty. If the transformer is bad, go with the DPI. |

Johnnie,2 wire wires from transformer,1 wire test .400 the other test 0 (shorted) ? If you plug the charger in and touch the two wires together sparks everwhere. Do you agree the transformer is shorted or I am missing something? Thanks

There are four white wires.
Two go to the capacitor, but the two you are most likely referring to are the two circled in red on attached photo. Those two wires are are connected together to create the center tapped winding needed for a full-wave rectifier out of two separate windings. The other end of those two white wires are the black wires (circled in blue) connected to the diodes. Bolt those two white wires together without connecting the black wire going to the charger's output cable to them. Disconnect the black wires connected to the diodes. Select AC Volts on your DVM, and attach one test lead to each of the black wires that were disconnected from the diodes. Plug charger into cart and into AC wall outlet. You should read about 90VAC. IF not, either the transformer and/or capacitor is bad. |
