Default What's the Diff?

I have a old Citicar electric that needs upgrading. Looking for a complete rear end with brakes and some type of posi. This will be for 72 volt system and used on the road.

Can anyone suggest where to find a decent roadgoing differential? The current unit is a Melex, but since it is a straight axle and attached with u-bolts, I think any other straight axle will work.

Also, the front brakes are shot. What kind of brakes are the faster road carts using? Are there any stock brake systems up to the task?

Thank you,
Xtian

Wow, you will get some looks with that one. I have never seen one of those, and I'm not a teen!!
Would any electric rear end work? What type of motor does it use?
I have a G2 yamaha rearend w/brakes I could sell for $300, and you can have the 36v motor free. There are more in the "for sale" section.
Most (some) people use crashed ATV hubs for the disc brakes. There are aftermarket discs, but they are very specialized.(you need cart spindles or the kit suppliers)
Looks........different, very different. Good luck! Drive it safely.

I think your old Citicar is cool!
Do you have mechanical or hydraulic brakes?
GEM uses Drum hydraulic brakes. Probably not even close. Just a suggestion for you to look into.

Thanks for the replies. I would trade looks for highway-legal anyday!

The brakes are hydraulic. Old system was a single master cylinder. Upgrades use a split system. Mine currently has neither. Lol.

This one was made in July 1974. Later models had gigantic bumpers f/r. (you wanna talk ugly?) Bodywork is colored ABS. Kinda brittle at this point. Might do aluminum replacements.

Still looking for brake/axle solutions. I think take-offs from y'all's monster carts would work. My axles are just u-bolted on, so swapping looks easy.
