Default Working On A G16 For A Friend.... Runs, Then Dies?

So I’m a die hard DS guy, but doing a buddy a favor & trying to diagnose his newly purchased G16?
PO purchased new, & Cart has been well cared for..
Annual services never missed, stored inside, golf course only use, etc etc
He finally got tired of trying to fix, so my buddy snapped it up for pennies
Cart has progressively gotten worse as of late...
Used to go 16 holes before no start...
Then 12...
6
You get the idea
Can smell fuel, & back fires at times... so not fuel
Has had full tune..
Brand new coil installed by dealer...
I haven’t pulled it out of my trailer yet, as work has been a little hectic these last 2 weeks (DSD)
Any G16 gurus out there know a specific gremlin on these? Or should I just go thru systematically until I trip over something...?

Hook up an in line spark detector. See if you have spark when the cart quits. If the new coil wasn't OEM, that may be the problem.

Check compression.

I believe G16 have a stop relay that goes bad and can kill spark.

FWIW I dont like those spark testers at all. They can be very misleading in cases where the coil is weak, but not failed completely. They only indicate "if" there is a spark. They don't tell you that the spark is hot enough to jump the gap in the plug, or ignite the air/fuel mixture. Best spark test is to just hold a spark plug to a valve cover bolt and look at it with your eyes for a bright blue spark. It may help to carry a spare plug in your pocket to speed it up so you dont have to remove the plug from the motor to check. Or test with a timing light as I've described in other threads recently.
