Default Won’t stay running unless the choke is on.

02 DS with FE 290. Wouldn’t stay running without the choke on. Swapped motor and trans (for other reasons) and have the same problem. New fuel lines, pump, fresh rec fuel. It’s almost car season and I don’t want to be without for another summer.

Help!!

Is your carb OEM or aftermarket? It should say keihin on the side of the carb body if it is OEM.

I'd start by giving the carb a good cleaning. If it's been sitting for a while you may need an ultrasonic cleaner to really get it cleaned.

Yup your air/idle circuit is most likely the culprit. Needs a good soak then blown out. I use the Barryman's (I think its called) carburetor soak. Looks like a 1-gallon paint can and has a basket inside so you can soak your disassembled carb in the cleaner. I've had mine for some years now though so not sure you can even find it anymore.

To prevent this, only run ethanol free fuel if you can find it in your area. If you can't find it at lest stick with super unleaded as it keeps longer than the regular old 87.

I use the "gunk" brand version of the same stuff in my ultrasonic cleaner. 30 minutes, little compressed air and good as new

Hi Jeff... I'm experiencing similar issues. Can you tell me where the air/idle circuit is? is it on the carb?

It on the out side of the carb, underneath the throttle linkage on the front side of cart. Its a flat head screw with a tab on it so you can't unscrew it. You must grind the tab off it so you can unscrew it. After you grind the tab off, your going to want to screw it in all the way counting the number of turns it took to seat it. You'll want to replace the screw in the same spot after cleaning it. I would not stop there though. Clean the whole assembly while your there. If you don't have carb cleaner at least disassemble and blow all ports with carb cleaner then compressed air if you have it.
