Mini Bike
I've had a mini bike in the storage shed for a while now. I started reworking it when I got it from my dad. I installed a 2hp motor on it to begin with, but it's way too small power wise.
I have a tiller that I installed a 6.5hp clone engine on a couple years ago. It sat all last year in the garden with a cover over it and never was used. So today I removed the 2hp engine from the bike and the 6.5 from the tiller. At one time I tried to install a 5hp Briggs on the bike but it wouldn't fit. It was too tall. So that's why the 2hp. I didn't know if the 6.5 would fit, but with it being the clone with the angled cyl. I was hopeful. I slid the engine in and the gas cap hit the top tube, so I removed the cap and it slid right in with a bit to spare. Then I was able to install the cap between the top rails and it will work. Now I just need to get a clutch that will fit the 3/4" shaft as the 2hp had a new clutch on it but is 5/8". Once I get this engine in and all hooked up this thing should run great with plenty of power. I'll most likely have to cut back the power for the grand kids. But I think the older ones will love it. I'll post a picture of the engine sitting in the bike when I get a chance. |

Re: Mini Bike
Yep, I have fond memories of this type bike as well. That's why when my dad had a couple I had to grab one.

Re: Mini Bike
We stuffed a mildly modded Tecumseh H50(5hp,7hp block family)into one of those minibikes once.We had to offset the motor way to the right to get the chain on it,so when you rode it,you had to lean left to counteract the centrifugal force of the flywheel and weight-offset.It was so nasty, that if you didn't lean over the bars it would flip.It was a last for about 2-hrs till we crashed it and broke the flywheel.Dad found out about 15 yrs.later and just laughed.Enjoy it,but be prepared, ours did well over 35mph.

Re: Mini Bike
Epb your probably correct. I'll have to get down there when I get back from Pittsburgh. Can't wait to get this thing together and see how it does.
I'd like to find one of those fat tire mini bikes. The one with the ATV type tires on it. Would be a blast for running around my woods here and the bigger grand kids would really enjoy it. |

Re: Mini Bike
I have a couple of Honda CRF-70s that we ride the crap out of. Start on the first kick and no clutch. Allows us to hold on to our favorite beverage while riding. Bought the BBR racing rear spring so us fat boys can ride it and put in a better CDI box plus a little smaller front sprocket to carry the extra weight. Things get around 75mpg. Something about the smaller bikes just sometimes is more fun that the bigger.. and smokin, sweet setup. You may be able to go get another tank from your local mower shop so you could move it. May not hold as much but doubt you will run through a tank in a day..

Re: Mini Bike
Those little Honda 70s are sweet. I always wanted one when I was a kid but never could afford one, but did have one like I'm building now. And it was a blast.
Bet yours are as well. It's nice when riding a small one, you can control it by sometimes just standing up. LOL |

Re: Mini Bike
I remember when I was kid, the guy next door has one of those laying aside his shed. I worked a deal and got the bike for mowing his yard(a lot). That thing had a 4hp motor and hauled butt. It had to do at least 30mph....which was quite fast for a kid in shorts, flip flops, no shirt or helmet.
Those were the days. |
