Default OK Jeep Enthusiast (NEED YOUR HELP)

Long story short,....owned a CJ 84 hardtop back in the day. Had to sell a few years back, (anyone with a shoulder to cry on)

Well been looking for quite sometime now for another. Found a 88 wrangler at a sweet deal. As for the post I'm asking for anyone with any advice on said model? I'm going to look at it after work and since I knew everything about my 84,...I don't know a lot about the 88's. I cursed this body style so much, with it's blasphemous square headlights replacing my beloved jeep body style.
Said I would never own one.

It's a 88 6 cyl manual

Oh Lord I just looked at my post count!!!!! PLEASE SOMEONE SPEAK UP

what do you want to know about it? they were bad for rusting out right in front of the door where it says jeep, near all leaf spring hangers, cross members and floor pans. they are leaf sprung front and rear, a lot of cj parts swap over to these yjs, the 6 cyl 5 spd is probably the best combination poosible with this jeep, a lot of them came with the 4 banger that wouldn't pull the sheets off a bed. I just sold mine..ask me something and ill try to answer

Ok so here's what i know. I have been running Jeeps for years and have had several year models. I have not owned one that i didn't like but then again i have never owned a 4 cyl The jeep in question is a "YJ" model.
I went straight from the old CJ's to the TJ's with the "YJ's" being in the middle. The main reason for skipping this generation is because of the Transmission. A few years of the "YJ" generation, Jeep put a manual transmission in these that was made by peugeot BIG "POS" !!! You can't find parts for them nor will any tranny place rebuild them "that i know of" because you can't get parts? There are however a few aftermarket companies that are making "kit's" for them but as far as i know the kit only consist of thrust washers and bearings shins and spacers. If you have a gear go bad or crack the 2 piece Case itself then you are junkyard bound . My neibor has been searching parts for about 7 months now and has almost got enough to get his jeep back on the road Hope this helps and remember what J.E.E.P. stands for "Just Empty Every Pocket

Well I said I'd never own a square headlight wrangler and I believe I'm going to stick to my guns,..... The guy was asking $4k for it.
The good,..Jeep had 170+k miles and he had went thru the motor and transmission. New steering column, and a lot of replaced items under the hood. Very clean under the hood. (except the puddle of blood under it) had small leak

The bad,...it was in rough shape even for a 27 year old. The wrap was faded and cracked, with a lot of surface rust. It cranked and coughed, wheezed and choked like a three pack a day old man. But that is just a jeep.

The ugly,..The frame is very bad shape as far as rust and cracked in places by the rear leaf springs, which was an issue on these models.

It boiled down to, if it was just for me yes I'd have made an offer. It would have been something that I'd spend countless hours on fixing and restoring. But this is something that I'm going to turn two teenagers and a wife loose in one day. I'd love to buy another CJ but can't everyone drive a CJ.

So the hunt continues ,..

I bought a brand new 1991 Wrangler back in the day. ($10,300) It was a 4 cyl, 5 speed and I loved it. When I installed a 4" lift and 31" tires it kinda turned into a dog... 5th gear was pretty useless after that, even on the highway. It was ok around town though.
Also - the gas mileage was no better than a 6 cylinder.

Never liked the newer Jeeps much, I have a 78 cj5 sitting under the carport, 100% original, My father in-law bought it new, it has been sitting since he passed away 5 years ago. Maybe if time allows I will get it back on the road for the Mother in-law to drive this summer.

the new ones have vents that blow from the dash, makes it nice in the winter. I prefer the tj because my lady and the kids are more comfy
