MX Bike Electric Buggy Build
OK, here goes...I'm taking Two Yamaha YZ-400f chassis's, and making a two seat side by side ( Maybe) out of them, using a golf Cart electric drive train to power the chains to the rear wheels. Once the bugs are worked out of the chassis setup, I will hop up the 48 volt motor to make it GO. Final plan is to use a Chevy Volt Lithium battery pack to get at least 50 mile range, and 40 mph, with acceleration to keep up with a stock Yamaha Rhino. I only have Saturdays to work on this, so progress will not be quick. I have the two bikes and just got a 48 volt Club Car cart, which I will take all the electrics out of. Here are some pics of the machines and beginning drawing of the buggy's layout. I Welcome everyones thoughts and suggestions! Thanks....

Re: MX Bike Electric Buggy Build
Well, Ive been able to do some more work on my Buggy. I have got the golf cart stripped of all the wiring, rear axle, and steering components I will need for the buggy. I also got the drawing revised with the golf cart motor and axle and the front forks to scale, plus two battery modules. I have purchased one Chevy Volt batter module, 48 volts and 2 kw. It will be enough to test the buggy when I get it driving. I have the chassis and body of the cart for sale for $100 if anyone is interested.

Re: MX Bike Electric Buggy Build
Yea, the golf cart remains have sold and left the building. Now I can get to the buggy building. Here are the bikes set about how they will be attached, and the parts from the Golf Cart which will go in the buggy.

Re: MX Bike Electric Buggy Build
So, some more progress. I've built a frame jig and cut the bike frames apart. I found the Golf Cart rear axle axle flanges line up with the rear sprockets on the bikes almost Exactly, so I will just bolt the drive sprockets on the axle flanges, Yea time saver! I have decided to build the frame out of 1.5 x 3.5 galvanized steel building studs, which I will box using a "Channel" section over a "Stud" section, which will be screwed-riveted together. Here are pictures of the frame progress and the drawing progress. The reason for using these framing materials are, 1) I have no welding ability, or even electricity at the storage facility I am building at, 2) the steel stud materials are extremely light and with a large cross section will be very stiff, 3) I can build it with only battery tools I can bring from home. I need to find out if the drive axle, from a Club Car, can be run with the motor tilted back so it is on the same level as the axles, or will it fill up with oil? Thanks!

Re: MX Bike Electric Buggy Build
Awesome. Just found this thread, but now subscribed. I hope to do something similar-ish at some point with a 250-350 cc ATV frame.
I really want a light weight 2x4 ATV that is quiet and has a 30 mile range. What made you go with the SXS over an ATV set up? |

Re: MX Bike Electric Buggy Build
I needed a buggy that will fit in the back of our truck while we pull our bumper pull camp trailer, and we are two Old people, so the machines that you can fall off of are off limits these days. We must have bucket seats and a roll bar! I have not been on here in a while due to medical issues, but the mending is going well and as soon as I'm allowed to work I'll be getting back to the buggy.

Re: MX Bike Electric Buggy Build
So you're planning on having a sprocket on both ends of the axle that each drive a chain to the rear wheels, right? That's why the passenger side is upside down, so the sprockets are both on the outside of the wheels?

Re: MX Bike Electric Buggy Build
Correct. It just seemed like an easy means to get it driving as all the other bugs are worked out. I may have to put a long axle on the short side to widen the buggy some, but we will see as it comes together.
