Went for a ride, this followed me home!
I keep an eye on craigslist and with spring in the air I've been looking at bikes. I already have one but I'm always looking anyway. Wife hates it.
So I'm looking thru SoEast MO craigslist and see the ad for a 2006 Yamaha 650 V-star classic. It's about 3 1/2 hours drive away. It says it's got a pinhole in the tank and is leaking and the guy is tired of messing with it. Other than that it looks pretty good. So I think, I should get hold of the guy. I email him 3 times and even send my phone number. No response and no phone number in the ad. So I try one last time and he answers. I make arrangements to go see it and head out. He doesn't get off work till 6pm so it's going to be a late night. I get take the trailer and when I get there he takes me to look and it is in good shape. Tires good, custom exhaust, been lowered and has ape hangers installed. Battery is dead (And I mean dead) and the tank is leaking a little. I talk to him a few minutes and I ask, "You didn't think I'd show up did you?" and he tells me he didn't. Said people 10 minutes away wouldn't even show up. Anyway, he's asking $800 for the bike (Since it has a salvage title and needs some work and cleaning) I offer $700 and load it on the trailer. The wife is tickled I brought yet another project home and a motorcycle at that. But I'm happy....... May fix it and turn it or may just keep it for a local cruiser. |

Re: Went for a ride, this followed me home!
Stuck a new battery in it today and pulled the choke......... cranked and cranked and spit and sputtered but no start. Then I thought, "I bet this one has a petcock" (My big bike doesn't have one) Turned it to reserve and it fired right off.
It warmed up a bit and then when I cracked it a bit it sounded great. The clutch was hung though and wouldn't disengage. I ran it a bit and kicked it in gear a few times while running and the clutch finally broke loose. So I took it down the road for a ride. Rides decent but the ape hangers will be something to get used too for sure. The clutch is acting better and it's running better already. I'll now pull the tank and weld the hole and then bondo, sand and paint the tank. I'm thinking since I can't match the paint that I'll pull all the body pieces off and sand, prime and paint the entire thing satin black. Should be a good looking/running bike when I'm done. The plan was too turn it for profit, but I may have to keep it around for a while. |

Bought a jet kit for it off ebay last night. Comes with the jets, adjustable needles, drill bit and puller to pull the caps so I can get to air/fuel mixture screws.
I'll then make baffles of some kid for the exhaust. It sounds good, but is just a bit too loud. |
