580K Case Backhoe

This is a muffler question.

I had to replace the radiator this year (2019) in the backhoe since the original one was leaking like a maniac.

As I continue my search for the upper and lower radiator hoses, I was wondering about the muffler. The top 'collar'? has rusted down until it is flat with the top of the muffler and doesn't reach up to the bottom of the stack.

New mufflers are couple hundred dollars.

I don't run the backhoe too often, but plan to keep it another 8 years or so.

Is rehabbing a muffler something I should consider?

JW this is my 2 cents and my family used to own muffler shops.

Forget about trying to fix that muffler. You can buy a new one online for less than $100.

Where would I get a new one for less than $100.

I've checked around online and A184237 seems to sell in the range from $267 to $294.53 plus you have to add shipping.

You want to help me figure out how to do this cheaper with a replacement that is 'good enough' bu not necessarily the exact same as this expensive piece?

I found the radiator hoses for less at MinnPar, but I'm to ignorant just now on what I don't know to move forward on a replacement muffler that isn't near OEM.

I just did a quick search on eBay and a couple places. Without part number for 580K Case.

I'm thinking I'm just getting thrown off by the pictures.

The pics of the $95 version looks long and thin, but the one I have is short and squatty.

I'll go measure everything tomorrow while the weather is warm.
Every site I go to does not mention dimensions.
I'm thinking I need more info.

Be warned girl, of chicrap mufflers, look fine but in a year the baffles come loose inside and or the inlet cracks off the muffler. That exhaust takes a lot of beating with vibration up there. Just a friendly heads up.

Inlet -- thats the word for that piece that rusted off.
I have a boroscope so I thought I'd look inside and see whats in the guts of this muffler.

Very exciting. Haven't done that before.

It’s usually either a couple steel plates arranged in a pattern, or it’s some tubes with fiberglass packed around them. I think the fiberglass is less common on diesels.

Personal experience with aftermarket mufflers on equipment... if it comes with no paint, clean it with degreaser and acetone, and prime and paint it with a quality high temp exhaust system paint. Makes a big difference in how long it takes before it rusts out again.

Also, be sure to put a rain cap on the stack, or use an angle cut end pipe to keep rain out. Rain getting inside the exhaust pipe makes them rust out pretty quick.

I measured things while down there yesterday and found the following:

1. The hood is not original to the backhoe. This is a 580K according to the decal/serial number so the hood should have a metal handle to activate the latch so the bonnet (hood) will tip forward. This has an older body hood with the rubber hood latches on top. Both latches are busted or gone and somebody added a short rope to one side. Lordy lordy.

2. The stack is about 3 foot vertical with a slight bend at the top where the pipe is slant cut. (yes I know thats a horrible description..lol). If it were parked outside all the time (which is has been), then you could get plenty of rain water in it if the storm came from the correct direction (which is has in the past).

3. I got the measurements for the muffler and will check to see what a similar replacement thats not OEM might cost.

4. Radiator hoses have already been shipped so next week when it warms back up I can make the next repair.

I'll let you know what I decide on the muffler.
