Default Glow Plug 6.5 LTD

I have a Suburban 2500 and it was having trouble starting in the cold. Tested the glow plugs and there were about 5 bad which explains the starting troubles.

I replaced the first two and then the 3rd was swollen. It happened to be in the worst possible spot on the passenger side below the turbo and exhaust manifold. It loosened up fine but would not come out the hole. I pryed on it with vice grips and the broken piece(about 1 3/4" long) FINALLY came out. The very tip of the swollen glow plug probe is now missing.

Would this piece leave the precombustion chamber and harm the cylinder or a piece that small blow out the exhaust?

I got the same suburban 97 model. Just had glow plugs replaced myself. I dont know enough to tell you to leave it or not. Just thought it was cool you got a dieslel in a burban. They are rare

That is cool you have one too! They are great rigs.

Here's a pic of mine pulling a couple golf cart tops through the snow. It's a 95 model.

Did the tip snap off or was it melted off?If end of plug is melted the remains also melted.They usually only melt that bad if you are shooting it with ether(start-fluid).Replace all 8,if those are shot the others aren't far behind.If the piece is snapped and you know its in there,the only solution is pull the head.The pre-cup might contain it if its' large enough but i wouldn't chance crashing it.The pass-side head is a tight-job in the truck,but can be removed,Driver-side is much easier.If you end up going that route,DO-NOT reuse the head-bolts.They are torque-to-yield,one-time use.Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help pachanga. Just got this suburban about a month ago. The previous owner's method of starting it in the winter was a spray of starting fluid everytime!
It ended up having about 4 gp stuck pretty bad but they all came out with some prying. The very tip of the probes on 2 glow plugs are broken off/missing. I'll post a pic of them if that would help. I'm not up to removing the heads on this it would have to go to a diesel shop.



That's a nice looking suburban there, Chevy. I like the wheels on it too! Mine has about 250,000 miles.

Xtreme, pull the heads, you will be better off doing this. If there is possibly a piece in there, the damage could spread on down. Glow plugs are not cheap, but it would be worth the time to check it out.

If you can work on a chevy v-8 you can do the heads on the 6.5.Very straight forward,If you need advice or info PM me,i'll give you my Cell# and walk you thru it.I had a 95 Crew-cab Dooley with the 6.5,built a motor for it and did a lot of other stuff to it.I've been workin on heavy trucks and diesels almost 20yrs.I have a lot of books and info on the 6.5 if you need it.Don't ever use starting fluid unless a last resort.The best cold-start method for extreme-cold(below 10)is wait for lite to go off,reset key,repeat glow-cycle.do this 3 times and fire it.I had mine 5 yrs,never plugged it in,and was below 0 many times,it always started without ether.If you must spray it,use silicone-spray,wait for lite to go off,give it a squirt and start cranking.Ether will melt the plugs because it burns too hot.Hope this helps.

Good info there, I helped rebuild my first truck, 81 chevey 5.7. If I remember right there was not much difference, learned alot. I used to drive it in 2nd gear most of the time to keep the rpm's up, truck ran great till my dad decided to let someone else drive it, he kept in 2nd geat at 70mph, the truck was never the same.

Thanks for the info and great advice! They should make the glow plug holes bigger so the gp tips wont get stuck.
