Spirit 340 Install Woes
Hello all! This is my first post on the forums, and I have a question about the cylinder heads on an Arctic Cat/Suzuki Spirit 340 motor. The exhaust doesn't fit quite right, and I am wondering if you can rotate the cylinder heads 180° so that the exhaust is at the back, and the intake is at the front? If it helps, it is a free air engine, and I already have it installed in the cart (a 1994 EZGO Medalist, with a custom 4 inch rear lift/axle flip, and will soon have Honda TRX450r front control arms and steering knuckles). The engine runs, pulls fuel through the lines, and spins the wheels, but the stock EZGO driven clutch does not seem to expand at speed... Is that because the wheels were not on the ground at the time? And any suggestions for building a roll cage? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Well, I got the jugs rotated, and they went together with no issue, but I need new gaskets before I can do a test firing. Here are the pics of the semi-completed jug flip, and a before teardown and after build so far pic.

Re: Spirit 340 Install Woes
The transfer ports are likely asymmetrical, so there's a mismatch, but as long as it's sealed well, it will run fine. may lose a couple HP, worst case.
Threebond 1194 will seal it, lower the ports a tad and up the compression, just a thought. |

Re: Spirit 340 Install Woes
Transfer ports are asymmetrical, and I have a full gasket kit on the way, as well as a choke lever and carburetor boot. Losing a few horses is not that big a loss, as it opens up a HUGE number of possibilities for extra mods! Plus, I will no longer need a pair of pliers for the choke! But, would I need to rotate the pistons as well?

Re: Spirit 340 Install Woes
You'll likely have to turn the pistons too, as the ring gap may be in the exhaust port. That's bad.

BTW, how are you planning to keep it cool?
The F/A engines get sluggish above freezing, in front of an open sled grill. |

With the seats I have, I got 4 cooling fans off of a couple radiators: 2 subaru WRX STI, and a dual Nissan unit. And with rotating the pistons, would I have to take the connecting rods out to do so? They seem to be a pressed fit...

Re: Spirit 340 Install Woes
Thinking about it now, would it be easier to relocate the fuel tank to the very back, and build custom manifolds to have side pipes instead?

Out the back should be quieter and keep the fumes away from the people better.
Pistons are held on with clips. http://www.arcticcatpartshouse.com/o...and-crankshaft |

Re: Spirit 340 Install Woes
Well, sweet! I couldn't see any clips when I looked at them on monday. But, then again, my motor's a late '70s, early '80s if I'm not mistaken. I'll have a look at it when I get to school this morning. Either way, hopefully my gaskets and carb boot will be in either today or early next week!
