Default Making a 400CCW go in reverse.

Hello all. Been browsing around, and read of a reference on making the sled motor have reverse. Has anyone a link to that post? I have winged it on all the modifications on the early 70's Harley Davidson, but this is the first I have seen of others using sled motors in a cart, besides myself. Any help would be appreciated. My home page has the motor photos if that will help.Thanks.

welding a rear end is as reliable as the welds. You need to heat the gears before you weld them to keep the strength. As far as reverse on this forum I found a thread where a guy wired his sled motor to run backwards like the stock cart motor. 2 strokes will run in either direction just fine. And as always don't forget the pics.
Thanks for any help.

Some sleds did that for reverse, older ones. The yamaha G1 does it and you can put the crank trigger on a 250 bravo sled engine (in the G1). Skidoo had sleds that would reverse instantly, I assume you would need the entire ignition system from it. It is just a matter of a second crank trigger that is advanced for reverse rotation, use that one for reverse. The skidoo iirc fired the plug way early to reverse it.

Just about all two strokes will run in reverse. Initial timing advance is minimal on all of them so when they run in reverse they are a bit late in timing is all. Not really an issue as you don't need full speed or power backing up. The trick is to get them to crank in reverse. Carts use the reverseable starter/generator to do so. Some old Merc sleds used twin starters mounted nose to nose that would spin the ring gear. A flip of a switch designated which starter would fire to spin the engine. Most older sleds that had reverse did it with a gear setup in the secondary reduction. It was the easiest way at the time because very few sleds needed reverse and a gear setup could be added to just about any of them without redesigning the whole system.

Modern RER two stroke sleds do it with the ignition control system. When you flip a switch for reverse it shuts down the ignition and lets the engine slow to a certian rpm then refires the ignition at an advance that will stop the upcoming piston and reverse it's direction. All done with electronics and the engine never really quits. Just stops and reverses in an instant.

As for the 400CCW. I would stay away from it. They are VERY old school in design (base design is from the 60's), prone to many failures that were solved with engines just a few years newer and parts are getting very hard to get. Point ignition, mechanical advance, pumper carbs, premix fuel. None of that was used anymore by the late 70's. Cool old engines but underpowered and unreliable.

Thank you VERY much for such a great reply. Yes, when I received the motor I did some repairs, and haven't had any issues with it so far (3 years) That is when the search was on for the starter with gears- That took a long time to finally find. I kept the pull start on it, just for GP. I agree, I'll just park right or pick it up and move it if needed. Really appreciate the info.:D

Yeah that RER is really cool you can hardly hear the engine reverse. The late 70s/80s yamaha are my favorites for projects, reliable as can be and good power...if you need an air cooled old sled engine. There is a place that makes gears for the back of CVT clutches, they use them on the small sprint cars or something to put starters on them.

Oh I thought he meant counter clock wise, I remember the CCW and Rockwells when I was a kid, Sachs in the mercs, though near everyone made a sled or engine back then. IIRC cyuna or something was another, Kaw and Suzuki.
