Tuning a sled clutch for golf cart use
Any suggestions for a starting point for tuning for a comet 102c in a cart using the stock driven pulley on the axle pinion?
Right now the engagement speed is a little higher on mine than it needs to be on a golf cart. Yamaha 540cc SRV sled engine with the stock comet 102c primary clutch with a-1 weights and a red spring. I'm wondering what other people have done to make their primary's work with the stock golf cart secondary's. I'd like it to engage at a lower RPM and also shift out more for a given part throttle RPM than it does now. I'm thinking about just going with a softer spring in general would be a good place to start and leave the weights as is for now. But I don't know what spring to purchase. I don't really want to spend $30 per spring for a bunch of springs that are complete guesses. Also, is there a good place to find a dust cover for the 102c for dirty environment use? |

Pink Spring!!!!
I love mine.. takes off around 3000 nice and smooth.. with the recommended stock (exciter 440) silver spring it engaged way too hard.. busted a little wheely out of the hole and I was afraid the rear end wouldn't hold up to the snap |

You want a shorter spring if you want lower engagement. The spring stiffness and weights tune shift rpm, lighter spring is lower as heavier weights is lower. But you still need to keep peak WOT rpm in the range to get full power. To change how it works for example you might have to go with heavier spring and heavier weights. Around here polaris parts were cheaper for some reason, and were the same stuff for the 102c I had on my srv. I ended up using the purple spring, the high altitude setup it worked great, but that was in a sled. It did engage smooth. But I swear it had a black spring in it and it engaged pretty low, then would rev later. Anyway, a shorter spring the same tension should lower engagement. The shift out is mostly in the secondary. If you have a preload secondary you can unwind it. |

Re: Tuning a sled clutch for golf cart use
One thing you can look at is a sled with normal setup and then a high altitude kit. The HA kit will raise engagement rpm and shift rpm will be nearly the same or only slightly higher. So you look at the spring rates and weight size and see what they changed. The HA kits tend to rev more easily when you gas it.

Re: Tuning a sled clutch for golf cart use
and another thing you do not want more then 20 thousands clearence on the belt sitting in the primary( might have to remove shim under spider to get less clearence)
remember the primary spring has 2 rates the pre load(engagement) and the rate (shift out) there is allot of spring combos you could run and heavier weights |

Any idea what weights you had? I might just try copying your setup as a starting point. |

Some of the springs are for different clutches, some charts show them all.

Re: Tuning a sled clutch for golf cart use
I have used both springs and either one works well, the 92 is just a couple hundred more rpm engagement. Find some stock ezgo weights from a 90 or newer, they will fit the 102c. They will give you the quick shift you need with that motor. The sock ezgo cover will fit the 102c.
