Not enough speed with snowmobile engine
I guess I am going to need an education here. I have an old good running Yamaha GP 396 engine in my Yamaha G-9 golf cart. The engine has the stock clutch it came with. The engine I would guess is running around 6 or 7 thousand rpm's. Its only translating to about 15 miles an hour on the cart. I know the drive clutch needs to get to the top and the driven get to the bottom. It looks like its doing that. I guess I need to know should the driven clutch be turning on earlier? Do I need a wider belt? Any help and schooling is greatly appreciated!!

Have you marked the clutch sheaves with a magic marker and run the cart?
two strokes sound like they are revving higher than they are so a test run may show that the secondary is opening too soon and loading the engine down below its power band. |

When you wrote " mark the sheaves" where do I mark them and what am I looking for? When should the seconday be opening? Should I put a tack on it and see if I am not getting into the power band? I am assuming with that motor probably about 7 grand or so I guess I could find that out on the internet. Have you found that the stock clutch for a snowmobile will work in the golf cart with no spring changes or changing weights to make it open up earlier? Sorry for all the questions.

Hey! I can answer this one( I think). Use a dark felt tip and mark a radial line (or lines) on each pulley. Then run the cart at max speed and then stop and examine marks. Where the belt has been rubbing, the mark will be rubbed off. Look for max diameter at drive pulley and min at driven pulley. The opposite would be the case at engine stop. If the marks don't show this pattern (IE: if motor doesn't get out to max diameter) clutch or belt maintenance or tuning are in order.
A simple, cheap one wire tachometer (available on ebay) would verify your "ear" tach. Once you have done this I'm sure others with more knowledge/experience can help you with clutch/belt tuning. hope this helps, Jay |
