Not able to rotate photo
I uploaded a jpg photo and have been unable to rotate it so it is properly viewable. The original picture was taken in the "portrait" orientation, but when upload to the BGW site, it displays in the "landscape" orientation. I recall seeing (and using) a procedure to rotate photos on this site, but can remember and can't find how to do it ... and have spent an hour researching to no avail.
Can anyone instruct me how to rotate a photo? |

Re: Not able to rotate photo
The easiest way is to open it on your computer, rotate it with your media viewer (Windows photo viewer), back out and make sure it stays that way in the folder (choose view, medium icons....) and then upload it.

Re: Not able to rotate photo
Or if you’re using an iPhone take your pictures holding phone landscape with home button @ 3 o’clock. I think then it’ll be right when uploaded?

Re: Not able to rotate photo
Are you actually hitting "save" so the original photo is rewritten?
It would be a lot better if this site's backend software would automatically rotate the pictures before resizing them and destroying the orientation information embedded in the original pictures. There may also be an updated version of the site's image resizing module that preserves the orientation information. |

Re: Not able to rotate photo
My images appear corrected when I view them. I'll re check the save on my end.
I see, it is a lot longer process and you have to save a copy !? Yet another reason I dislike win10. Why would I automatically want everything more complicated? |

Re: Not able to rotate photo
Unfortunately You cannot blame this one on Windows, the issue is caused by the outdated "gd-jpeg v1.0" this site uses.
This is a really old problem that most of us in the industry dealt with before 2010. It looks like most modern image programs, including my favorite paint.net no longer auto rotate the image when saving them either. Your phone camera does not adjust the image orientation just because you turn the phone up/down/sideways, it takes too much processing power given the large amount of pixels todays cameras can capture. The phone simply writes the "orientation" needed for viewing in the jpeg metadata (part of the image itself like GPS location, etc). All browsers and devices read the "orientation" information embedded in the picture and display them correctly. When you upload an image to this site and the site resizes it, that outdated image library used assumes no important information exists in the jpeg metadata and erases it. When you then view the image on the browser, it displays it exactly like your camera took the picture without knowing that it should be rotated for proper viewing. We used programs like jhead.exe and/or jpegtran.exe to auto rotate the images back on the old days for compatibility issues, but that was several years ago. |

Re: Not able to rotate photo
I set my phone to take pics 1365x1024 or downscale the pics on the comp with paint to 1365x1024. I no longer have a problem with the site program down-scaling and flipping my photos. Hope that helps.

Re: Not able to rotate photo
I take most photos these days with my iPhone 5 ... our Panasonic digital camera barely gets used anymore. I most often take photos in Landscape mode, but occasionally take a few in Portrait mode. If the picture does not display properly on my phone, I will usually correct the rotation on my iPhone. I later transfer the photos to my desktop which is running Windows 10 and seldom have to make any rotational adjustments ... perhaps just for ones that I did not adjust on the iPhone.
The Portrait photos that I "attempt" to load as attachments on BGW view normally on both my iPhone 5 and my Windows 10 desktop computer (no rotation adjustment is required). But when upload to BGW, they rotate so you have to view them sideways. I am not sure of what other "work around" to try other than shooting any photo that I intend to post to BGW in Landscape mode. I seem to recall that I have been able to rotate photos on BGW successfully in the past ... but perhaps my "aged" mind is playing tricks on me. Thanks for your feedback ... this sounds like a common problem ... if any of the more "tech savvy" members (yes, I had to spell check "savvy") have a solution, please share it. |

Re: Not able to rotate photo
I built upon all of your comments and have it figured ... kind of !!
My original picture (IMG_4245.jpg) views on my Windows 10 desktop in the correct orientation with the fire burning up! When I post the same picture to BGW, the orientation gets changed with the fire burning to the left! (see photo 1 below) As a test, I rotated the original picture using my Window 10 default program "Photos" by 90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees and just for giggles by 360 degrees ... each time starting with the original picture and saving it as a new file name after rotating it. I have attached the pictures below in the following order: Original Photo, 90 degree rotated, 180 degree rotated, 270 degree rotated and 360 degree rotated. Low and behold, the 360 degree rotated photo displays on BGW in the correct orientation ... with the fire burning up. Hopefully this can be of some use to those that have trouble posting "Portrait" type photos in the correct orientation. |
