Default 2009 Tomberlin Emerge TRIES to run backwards

Brand new to this site for posting. I have read others post for help, but can't figure out this issue.
Sorry if this is too long. 1st time working on a golf cart.
2 years ago I pulled in the garage and plugged in my charger. Started charging fine. 5 minutes later a significant pop/ noise and everything went dead. No lights, speedometer, no power to the motor.
Life interrupted, and a year later I decided to look at it.
New batteries August of 2017, still nothing. So I took it to the dealership where I bought it. The "tech" looked at it and told me the computer was bad. I installed a rebuilt identical computer still nothing. Life interrupted again. Summer 2018 My own research found the 12 converter and a quick volt test proved it bad. New converter fixed the lights, and related 12 volt items. Charger works fine full battery voltage. Still no motor response. Accelerator seems to work, so I pulled the motor off.
The brushes were seized to the armature and heavy pitted. Appears a power surge? Corrosion?
Cleaned the armature & light buffing with 220 sandpaper.
I sanded the brushes to match the radius of the armature, installed motor. PROGRESS, kinda. Cart on jack stands it runs over 30 mph, but BACKWARDS. Forward/Reverse switch makes no difference. On the ground it barely will move backwards.
Any chance the speed sensor could cause this?
One more thing, under the dash is a diode that I removed for testing. Any chance I put it back the wrong direction? I didn't take a picture before I took it apart.
I uploaded some pictures. Pretty sure I made all connections correct. I took pictures.
At dead end.

If that is a diode, what does it go to? The way I'm looking at it, it could have been put back the wrong way.

Can't you pull that diode back out and using your Multimeter test it to see which side is the Cathode end? (Usually the side with the stripe)

Then again using your Multimeter, test each connection (your orange wire and blue wire) to determine which is positive and which is negative?

check the rocker directional switch. test the solenoid next to the controller(it has directional diode). the solenoid itself may be defective. Are you sure about the accelerator being OK.
