Dad's harley starts fine with a charged battery, but battery doesnt charge.....is it the starter generator and what are his options?

Here are the possibilities and yoiur options:
1. Faulty VR; check connections (esp to ground); jack the cart, start engine and rev; your multimeter (digital is preferred) should show an increased voltage reading
2. Faulty starter gen; check brushes
3. Faulty over-all wiring
4. Spent battery (dead; noit accepting charge anymore)
Try charging battery directly from outside auto battery charger.
If this is the problem, buy a 12V auto battery.

Battery is fine, will charge with a standard charger
I take it this is basically like testing an alternator in a car??
