2000 txt ezgo running slow

My 2000 txt ezgo is running really slow. Charged the batteries, showing 38 volts +. Pressing on the gas gets movement but very sluggish. It has a stock controller with a high speed D&D Motor, 170-500-001. Just fixed up this cart, and never ran it till now, but according to D&D the motor should run 18.5 mph. Any thoughts on what to check?

where is your F/R switch?, on the dash or by your knee? do you have a TOW/RUN switch on your controller cover under the seat? and how old are the batteries?

F/R switch is by my knees. There is a tow/run switch. Batteries are 2009.

If that is a 170-500-0001 D&D motor, it is for a Sepex (Regen) system and will work (according to D&D) with a stock 300A PDS or DCS controller. I don't think the controllers in a 2000 TXTs were 300A.

One or more weak batteries, too small (or bad) cables and/or too low ampacity controller could all be reasons the cart is sluggish.
Also, D&D specs indicate you loose 10% in the Torque department to get the 18.5 mph.

If you want to get maximum performance out of that motor, you've gotta throw amps at it.
When that stock DCS controller blows (and it will), replace it with an Alltrax DCX500 or something similar, and a HD Solenoid.

In the interim, upgrade the cables to at least 4ga. (2ga would be better)

FWIW: I get 18.2 mph from the 2008 PDS described below and it is completely stock except for the 2ga cables. (My T-105s are 2009 also)

In circa 2000, E-Z-Go made some PDS carts with a DCS type F/R switch at the drivers knee instead of the rocker switch on the dash.

Plug your serial number in at this site and it'll tell you what your cart is.

If the batteries were well maintained and never been discharged too deeply, they ought to be good for another couple years.

need to start checking the batteries first, you might have a bad battery, check the water in the batteries, and make sure it is 1/2 inch above the plates, only use distilled water.
need a pack reading on the batteries, only after the pack has been OFF the charger for 12 hours to get a true reading, and need to test each battery, and post the what you find here, and it would help to do a load test on the batteries, hook/tape your volt meter leads to the pos and neg on your pack and take it for a ride and see how low the volts drop, and then do the same to each battery, that will tell us alot

Using the serial number lookup, the cart is a 2000 Electric TXT Golf Car, serial number 1266168. Manufacturer number is D300.

I'll try the battery test and report back. Thanks.

Ouch... It didn't say whether it was a PDS or a DCS, but with the Run/Tow switch on the controller cover, it is one of the two.

Does the top of your controller look like this? ( 3 bolt-on terminals and 2 smaller push-on terminals) Or does it have a 10 pin connector on top also?

It has a ten pin connector on top.

Ok, that means it is a DCS.

If you identify your cart as a 2000 TXT DCS in future posts, everybody will know what it is and won't ask where the F/R switch is and other questions trying to identify which drive system.

Like rib said, check out the batteries first.
