24mm Experimental Carburetor
 

The new 24mm carb sold by Vegas Carts has a fixed air/fuel mixture screw. It is been epoxied into position then the screw head is broken off. This has caused operational issues for some of the people who have used it on there 460's and on the new 625cc engine.
The remains of the screw are very hard to remove. If you don't have precision tools - please don't try it by hand. I did some work for a friend who had tried to remove his. I was able to use an 1/8" end mill and get the remains cleared out. I located my drill off of the inner idle port. It had been opened to about 1/16" on an inch. I drilled and taped it for 10/32 machine thread. I located a source of a variety of needles and adjusters. This is an experimental repair with no guarantee of working. I'll let the owner continue this if wanting too. Here are some pictures of the work done.

I will own up to the mess I made. I tried soldering iron,soldering gun,slotting,squaring the adjustment screw. It just continued to flake and crumble with each thing I tried. I then moved to an easy out kit and with each attempt things got worse and worse.On my last attempt I ended up drilling right thru the screw itself. I conclude to be a BAD machinist with hand tools and will not attempt any more half fast work on carbs. When it returns due to MANY thanks to Shepard I promise a full report how it works. I now have 4.1 hours this season back on the 21 mm carb with the EC adjustable main jet. I have the cold starting again working without a choke decent idling and killer top end. What I lost from the 3 jet is the smooth lower mid range between 2000-3000 rpms. At 3000 and above it cleans up nicely and I can stomp on it at any rpm without any stumbling. I suspect the main jet is set up a little rich but riding rather than tuning on these great weather days.

HIP HIP HURRAH Many thanks to Shepard his EXP 24 carb saved the day.It works better than ever and I suspect when some other factors let me work on it there is even more with some fine tuning.

I'm glad it works - most likely won't need as much throttle to make it idle. What do you set your idle at? 950-1000 rpm is what I like to idle at -- makes shifting very easy.

Cold start works great and idle is 1080 rpms. All is good.

I received my EXP-S carb a few days ago after a message to Shepard telling him that I had messed my carb up also by using hand tools and lack of patience. He built one up and as soon as it arrived I installed it. The cart started right up and was so easy to dial in and runs so much better.

I've done a lot of carburetor work in my life and can tell you that jetting a carb can be almost impossible for the inexperienced mechanic. Changing jets one at a time is so limited in response and expensive -- but most of all timing wasting unless its the only way you can go. You can adjust the 3 adjustments on a carb in less then 15 when the circuits are metered. It just has to be warmed up and have the air filter in place.
