Camp Project "Got Milk"

1 Attachment(s)
Hello All,

We have been avid campers for the past 2 years now at a local site about 15 minutes from our house. Several other family members have carts up there from stock (89 EZ Go Marathon) to not (02 Club Car 670 swapped). We have so many people at camp that we really needed another cart.

I ended up picking up a 97 Yamaha G16A that has been used in the cornfields prior to my procurement. Hope to get it running for now and do a health check. Lift, tires and a back seat in the short term and then maybe an engine swap down the road.

Only had a few minutes before it got dark to look a little deeper into the G16. This cart did run and I drove onto my truck bed. After initial thought it has come to me that this cart has been severely abused and neglected. I knew this was a farm cart to start but I should have remembered my high school farming days of gum and coat hanger type repairs.

My first order of business is a compression test. However I cant even do this due to S/G belt slippage. I went to tighten the S/G and noticed it is missing the lower 3rd mounting bolt and the adjusting screw was bottomed out. I proceeded to removed the adjusting screw and it snapped clean off. Luckily a pair of vise grips removed the remaining bit. I will have to go obtain new hardware to get the S/G correctly mounted and adjusted.

I then pulled the spark plug. Its ugly, like oily and rusty ugly. Really got me thinking I may be in for my 2nd Vegas Carts Predator swap sooner than anticipated. I was hoping to get a year or so out of the current engine before I hit this bridge but am hesitant on putting any money into the OEM block. The engine oil level is up to full but is pitch black.

Also noticed I am missing the inner fender on the drivers rear. Not sure if anyone has a parts cart lying around but I am looking for a usable fender and mud flaps combo as this part seems discontinued. More to come later after the compression results.

Spent more time with the cart today. Need some advice.

Compression WOT for about 4 revolutions maxed out at 125 PSI. Its low..... we did get the cart running but qere having fuel delivery issues. The pulse pump just wasn't pumping. We gravity fed it and got the cart running but it was consistently belching oily stinky smoke. It really needs a rebuild. At this point I am hesitant on putting money into pulse pump/carb work know the engine will me a mosquito killer. Contemplating jumping right to a predator swap. I did find rebuild exchanges on ebay for $700 to $900 so that will be the cheapest way to get back in motion. Has anyone had luck with online rebuilds?

It sounds like the rings are sticking on the piston. Never delt with online rebuilds but its worth a shot to put some Lucas oil additive and run it or "smoke less oil" and see if the rings free up before spend 900.

I plan to pull the engine over the next month or so and rip it apart to see. Maybe a hone and new rings we could be back in action. Thinking a predator 420 of I do anything other than a rebuild.

Welp, the really dirty teardown/inspection process happened today. Looks like the starter-generator held some water at some point. Not sure if its salvageable.....
