I'm wanting to upgrade my 14S Leaf Pack to 14S2P. Anybody know of a source for Gen 2 Leaf Cells. (I'm assuming you can't mix Gen 1 & 2) Any ideas why the shortage.

They only come from salvaged vehicles - and they have not used them for a while. That and demand are making them harder to find.

Yeah the market got saturated with buyers and folks scooped them up. The newest generation are an entirely different animal and you'd want to use the whole pack to get your desired voltage since they're laser welded as one, say, 48v unit.

There's no reason you can't mix gen 1 and gen 2 cells, especially if you add one in parallel to each gen 1 you already have.

Anytime you mix batteries of different ages, you want them paralleled with the older cells so they share capacity.

Its ok to put a 40 ah cell in parallel with a 50 ah cell.

What you don't want to do is put a 40 ah cell in series with a 50 ah cell..

You can mix capacities all you want, just make sure that each bank of paralleled cells in your 14s string are close to the same capacity.

You don't want 2 paralleled modules in cell bank #1 to be 30 ah, while the two paralleled modules in cell bank 12 to be 60 ah. That would cause your BMS to work overtime and it probably wouldn't keep up.

Guys who build 240p14s banks out of 18650's will have all kinds of capacity variances between the individual batteries, just so long as the entire 240 paralleled cell bank is close to the same as the next one, its fine.

If you do add new cells to an existing pack, you want to make sure that the individual cells are balanced with the ones you are putting in parallel before connecting them. You can use a power resistor to limit the current and connect them that way until they equalize. I also recommend that you balance the whole pack before installing it so that your BMS doesn't have to try to correct a large imbalance. I charge the cells to 4V per cell before balancing them.
