G16-- UNI filter, or factory air filter box?

Hey fellas! I spent the weekend replacing parts in my G16 limo I recently picked up, go it together, and got it running! Drives great too, by the way!

So now I have just a couple little things left to make the engine bay 100% complete. I have a factory air filter box for the cart, just no filter....

$20 will get me a stock air filter or $60-70 will get me a performance air filter. I was thinking of just modifying the factory air box's neck coming off the carb to just attach a circular UNI filter or K&N filter to, and re-jet the carb. Any reason to not go the second route and use a universal-type high-flow filter???

I have the stock muffler currently installed, but plan on likely welding up a spare 4-stroke ATV muffler that I have. I'm sure all of this won't necessarily make for much of a noticeable power increase, but for now I'm sure this little stock motor can use whatever it can get. I do plan on getting the torque kit for the rear clutch, but that aside, what are your guys' opinions on what I'd like to do for the intake/air filter and possibly the muffler? Thanks!!

What type of riding will you be doing? Paved roads, gravel ,off road?

Keep the stock air box at all costs! Go check out Rons G16/plowmans build, in "on road golf carts"!

Thanks for the responses guys!

Craig, I plan on mainly off-road driving in the cart. Nothing serious, but just woods, dirt, occasional mud and water puddles.

Thanks Mike, I checked out Ron's build and it's pretty impressive but I don't want to quite go all out like he did money-wise. I should have mentioned that I'm keeping this project on a tight budget... I have too many other projects going on right now.

Why do you strongly suggest to keep the stock air box? If it is to simply insulate the filter from debris then I can pretty much do that by either mounting something like a UNI filter in a remote location, and/or create a shield for that type of filter to protect it from debris. I'd like to get a laundry list of stuff from Plowman's, but the budget just won't allow for it. I plan on getting the posi rear-end kit here in the coming months, and maybe a rear clutch kit and belt, but that's about it for the time.

But yeah I'd rather go with a UNI filter and pre-filter (to protect from water penetration) and use the ATV exhaust that I have for cost-saving measures if there is no strong reason to avoid going that route. What do you guys think?

Any gauze or foam filter doesn't filter like a paper filter. Its so dusty in the engine bay when off roading, it will shorten the life of the motor. Also you will get noise from the intake track, not fun to listen to all the time. Increase the inlet opening, to allow more air to enter the stock box.

Good point about the foam vs. paper filter statement. But isn't the Plowman high performance filter a foam filter similar to a K&N??

Don't know Gray, talk to Ron. I have a G8, so mine is the old style.
