Old 36V motor new 48V conversion
 

If I upgrade my cart to 48V, will I need to change my motor?

Any suggestions on a 48V conversion kit for 36V 1999 txt with estimated cost? Debating if I should up grade or start from scratch with a 48V cart.

The 36V motors handle higher voltages without issue. The problem some people see is too much amperage. If you upgrade to a 500 amp controller but keep the stock motor then the normal recommendation is to turn down the max amps to 400 while you run the stock motor.

To upgrade to 48V you will need:
1) new batteries
2) new charger
3) new battery cables
4) 48V compatible controller
5) 48v compatible solenoid

In the research I did, and sorry, it was a while ago, and I can't remember the exact sources, but on mine, a 93 Marathon, here's what I found.

There were two motors used on the 36V carts of that era. There was a blue GE motor, and a black AMD (?) motor. The AMD motor was stronger, and more capable of handling the upgrade from 36V to 48V.

The blue GE motor was lighter, and not as strong. It's not recommended to take that motor to 48V.

I had the GE motor, so I upgraded to a Plum Quick Widowmaker.

I am really happy I went with cartsunlimited.net, scotty B has helped me with several conversions over the years. An alltrax 500xct is better than any stock 48 volt system. Definitely do the conversion. I'm still running my 36 volt motor on 48 volts, years later with no issues.

To the OP, I was in the same boat as you recently. Trying to decide where to go after my 6+ year-old Duracells. I decided to rip off the band-aid and kill a lot of birds with with a ****-expensive stone. 48V upgrade, LiFePO4 upgrade, Alltrax controller (thanks Scotty). I'm using the stock motor with the Alltrax 400A limit. The cart seems to like it fine. I sure do! :thumbup:
