Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

checking out the suspention and the rear def sucks..i can lift it till the other tire comes off the ground and the rear end is still level with the body:thumbdown:
time to get some links started in the near future..heres what im gonna buy.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-LINK-KIT-1...6f1b20&vxp=mtr

ive built a couple suspentions before with great success but never use heim joints? i always used currie johnny joints, but it is just a golf cart..

question;do heim joints get loose and rattle or make noise after a yr or so of hard use? i hate rattles and noises is why im asking..

the front takes all the articulation as of now.

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

old school jvc installed in factory dash,,fit exact and cut the rear so if fits very snug..
moved the brace under the dash and made a much better one so the radio could go between the brace and cowl supports.
will add diamond plate on the lil spots beside the radio, and pro cut a cover for the drink tray.
also may do the brake and gas pedal in d.plate today..

got the pass side glove box door mounted and half bolted down..see i missed a spot with the blue paint too, haha
gonna use punisher skulls ive used on guns for the handles and mount them a half inch out for that 3d look,,there polished ss but i think they need to be blue..heres the pass side door, and a pic of the skull im thinking of using..

ok,changed my mind on the handles since i had 2 white brass handles that look good enough for me..
did about 15 miles in the cart today,,few hills and played on some rocks:mrgreen:
the faster i can kill this 2 stroke the faster my finished product will be done, haha
lil 2 stroke kicks but..i think its even original..

thanks:wink: got more done today..made some accent pieces from scrap perferated alum stuff to go on each side of the radio, above radio and a few other things to kinda blend the rednecked dash all together..
made a plate under radio for cockpit style toggles down the road..

Thanks. Ya, Im sure Ill be needing some help on mine!! Ive built, fixed, driven just about everything... never been into a cart before though!!! Its all new to me.

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

very addicting  built one 5 yrs ago and was a sweet ride..traded it for a jeep i sold for 7 grand after some long arms and bumper builds i did..
figured if i did it to a oldie maybe i will keep it this time..
me and the wife drive it prob 50-60 miles a week total, all in the woods up hills thru pot holes at 23 mph, even thru a lil mud..sugar sand here is 2 ft thick and hard to walk in but the cart with the aftermarket sahara tires just slows down and pulls thru everything i throw at it..
thats why in a few months i will be 3 linking the rear and long travel a arm the front..so when i hit the bumps at high speeds my back will feel a lil better:thumbup:

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

put another 17-20 miles on today in the woods.,finished the back rest today too!!
hooked up the stereo and having tunes while beatin thru the woods is great.
i think i talked the wife into letting me get a long travel front end after christams sometime..i find chrome ones on ebay ,look like strectch plastics, and there like 700 delivered iirc..
then theres jakes,,? anyone ever had both to compare each? the stretch plastics looks beefyer, but dont like the look of the double arms where they hook to the spring mount..
i like jakes but the dom tube they use is smaller than one inch,,seems kinda small even tho its a proven long travel.. any suggestions??

**** that cart is looking good. At least your able to drive it. I'll be awhile before I'm ready for that.

After looking at both kits I think the Strech one is the better of the two. That small diameter on Jakes just makes me nervous.

thanks polar:thumbup: the jakes is prob fine but i think i will go with sp also..providing there still in buisness in a few months..i think the talk was all wrong as i see threads from yrs ago and there still here..

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

is it just me or are You missing a blue stripe somewhere ?!?!?!

I've long considered doing a long-travel cart, but after enough time spent beating mine like dogs and cruising in my buddies "high-buck" carts, I really just can't justify the expense, the rear clearance isn't going to change, and being able to crawl over bigger crap is just going to put you in an even MORE uncomfortable position once you try and drag a Marathon rear end over whatever the new suspension got You into ....

Just my two cents, your mileage may vary - picture one of your mentioned project trucks with a 1971 Plymouth Scamp rear end and suspension, would that have been all the same fun? See where I'm going, Amigo?

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

the pics was from yesterday..i finished the seats today just not a new pic..i see what your sayin brew..but since it will just be a lil at a time im gonna do the front and rear for 8-10 inches of travel at each wheel..slide in the 4 stroke rear i got and the honda engine..when the tires i have wear out i will get 27,s minimum and prob modify the lift if need be..
the cart does a fine job as is,but when the rear end shifts left and right on catiwampas off camber stuff in the path,,even at low speeds it throws us back and forth quite a bit and makes me real sore for a couple days..
ive actually thought it out and was thinkin of cutting the rear swing arm in the front center in half, weld in machined bearing bungs and a double sided spindle with a couple grease fitting..i feel it would work great and on the cheap when doing it myself.heck, even cut it and put a machined sleeve of smaller pipe in there and weld one end,,one grease fitting and keep it greased..would prob lasr for yrs..hard to belive this has not been done yet? think about it?
i feel it would have much better independant ride like a long arm on a jeep.
many tryed to talk me out of the long arm on a 97 tj i had,,after i did it the difference was like night and day to my back 8)
i feel the bumps i hit at 10mph would be less than half the pain with a better supention  front is fine,,rear is crap..and i was worried about the 5 inch blocks up front in the begining lol..theve took a beating so far:thumbup:

sassycat 11-25-2012 10:52 PM

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

oh yeah, the seat covers were staple on from uptoparcarts.com from largo fl..the fit was perfect and quality seems top notch..feels much better with th new backs for sure,,the others were like a block of concrete lol
covers were 70 buck shipped and worth every penny:thumbup:

1fast67 11-26-2012 01:48 AM

I didnt think you could put a long travel on a marathon. I thought it was 94 & up. I guess with a welder anything is possible.

finally,,whew, took me hrs t dig these up..i cant remember if the ezgo i had was a 99 or 2001 model? pt #70739 and 70740??
these spindles look familiar to anyone? i think the left one in the pic is the drivers, and right pic the pass side?i think and the red nylon bushing go up?i think.
dont remember what the alum bracket with rubber in them were for either, but i remember seeing somthing like this on SCOTTYB,S build pics before?maybe they were to keep the rear end from folding under acceleration iirc? i may pm him and ask him soon..

anywho,,i think these are the spindles i can use on a stretch plastics 94 and up front long travel..this sound correct fellas .as always, thanks:thumbup:

Nice cart gun!!! Spent the day shooting myself yesterday. Broke out Dads old 1911 that he left me,for the first time... good fun!!!

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

i love the old 1911,s..good shooting guns:thumbup: yrs ago we tryed busting a bowling ball at 75 yds,,the 45 kept bouncing off but the 357 mag shattered it first shot into many pieces.guess it had to do with the fps velocity..

whoohoo,,idler bushings, spindle bushings and upper rack balljoint just arrived via brown truck:mrgreen:
maybe i will have a tighter steering now.

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

im jealus where you get to live polar:mrgreen: my wife cant handle the 35 degree weather much less there..
ok,got the spindle pin bushings all replaced,,went well in like a hr or less,thankfully..in the am im gonna tackle the upper rack balljoint and the idler arm bushings....8)
also mounting speakers and tweeters from old magnavox under the dash on the floor..then i guess i have to make speaker grills since they dont exist for this setup:mrgreen: i have a good idea if i can remember it tomorrow, haha
need to finish other glove box too!!
maybe i can multi task tomorrow..

the grip tape;;good idea to heat with heat gun or dryer just to get gun warm, then after your done, wrap the grip kinda tight in electrical tape and let it sit for 8 hrs and its very firm afterwards..it can be removed kwik if wanted also, but still fits the holster great w/no damage as of now..

sassycat 11-27-2012 06:55 PM

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

got all the new steering parts installed and wow,,what a big difference..the king pin bushings made a huge diff also..set the tow in to 1/8th inch and went for a ride..
installed new 500cca marine starting battery also.
got the speakers mounted and wired up,sound real good for free, kinda:mrgreen:
made a templet so i can make some speaker grills when i get the material thursday..
re did all the stereo wiring and got it all hid,,not in the pic tho..
now the cart noise comes thru my speakers with radio on?it didnt before,,could it be because the new battery more noise?maybe cause the wires are routed diffrent?
been a long time but i think theres a noise suppresor or ? i can hook up for that..

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

yep - should be able to pick one up at Advance or even Walmart, should be right around $7 and goes inline on the power feed(s) to the radio :)

sassycat 11-27-2012 09:04 PM

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

thanks again brew:thumbup: i remember using one like25 yrs ago,,never needed one since,till now i guess..8)

BrewCityMusic 11-27-2012 09:28 PM

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

nothing (and I mean NOTHING) is shielded on these things, none of the grounds are isolated, etc so pretty much ANY RF is going to sneak through ... You *should* be okay with just popping a supressor inline, but if the whine still comes through you want to look at isolating the speaker frames themselves from any grounded metal (basically ANY metal) and if need be, sometimes it helps to isolate the head unit mounts from any metal-to-metal and strictly use the ground in the wiring harness - might be a little fiddly BS but it IS a surmountable peak, LOL

thats a sweet cart i am new here and just got myself a ez go that been lifted like yours. If you dont mind pm me i would like to ask you some questions about that moter. thanks

sassycat 11-28-2012 08:02 AM

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

you da man brew:thumbup: i have it grounded straight to the battery and the hot has a 7.5 inline fuse..im not a amp guy lol,,speakers are plenty for me..
now you mentioned the metal on the speakers being isolated from the cart makes a lot of sense..
when the speakers were in the dash sitting there i could jam,as there was no noise.
now with them mounted and bolted to the metal body you cant even listen to the radio while driving..
good point for sure,,will try the noise reducer today:thumbup:

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

thanks qb 8) got the rear bumper alum plates cut and drilled this afternoon, and the 3/16 thick pipe,,the side plates are 3/8th very hard marine grade alum:thumbup: bad part is my welds wont look as good ,as im used to the softer bendable extrusion ,,but no worries i wont come off lol..
gonna weld it all up in the am hopefully..going to make the pipe bumper flush with the factory cart bottom bumper for more ground clearance,as the alum reciever tube will be the only thing lower than the factory bumper plate thingy:thumbup:
im trying to look ahead when doing everything so when the rear stretch and 27,s are ready to go on someday it will all blend together as one mean lookin rock crawler of a cart:mrgreen:

sassycat 11-29-2012 09:12 PM

Re: OLD BLUE,85 marathon re-construction

went out and got stuff kinda ready,,gonna weld it in place to keep it straight, then remove it to finish welding the bottom, then round the corners a lil bit and bolt it back up..whhooohooo
im thinkin about making a fold down spare tire carrier/stinger hoop off the bumper. kinda like on some jeeps, but made from alum 1 inch solid like the front stinger..then if im in the woods and want a table or work bench i can fold it down and have a small table..i also have a air compressor and tank from a ambulance and the tank will fit between the roof bars behind the seat..i may need onboard air someday i figure..haha
tomorrow i can finally clean up my yard with the cart and trailer:thumbup:
