We camp about an hour and a half away and it's really tough to get out there in winter. I plan on taking the batteries at home and storing them in my basement? Would that be a good idea? Should I do anything else to keep them good for winter?

It's not recommended but if you give it a full charge then it should have some charge left at after several months. Obviously a battery maintainer is the best rather than the factory charger. The factory charger will not come back on when the batteries get low, unless you unplug it and plug back in. Definitely turn off the tow/run switch if you have one.
