G1 relay, not solenoid
 

I'm about ready to try and get my cart running. I have charged a battery,
purchased a carb, printed out a wiring diagram, and read hundreds of
posts here on BGW about getting one up and running.

I've going thru the wiring on my G1 and have found a few issues with
cut wires and repaired any obvious issues and left a couple for later.
I noticed my relay and buzzer are gone, not the solenoids for FWD or REV,
but the small 4 wire relay that is supposed to be on the rear passenger
fender.
Do I need this to run the cart?

Can I wire in a regular bosch style relay and what type do I need?

i think that a bosch will work. if you know which wire does what. i have a resistor i found in my dads garage that he says is from a 56 chevy.

Yamaha added the relay to the G1 in 1983. Not sure why. In looking at the wiring diagram for '82 and '83, I think the relay can be bypassed by simply connecting the two white wires together which should make it electrically identical to a 1982.

You can verify this yourself by looking at the wiring diagrams referenced in the Sticky above.

Kwest is exactly correct, just connect the 2 white wires.:thumbup:

I picked up a 30 amp SPST Relay and a few connectors.
I wired it in and still no pedal start. I found the red/white
wire that was supposed to be connected straight to the
battery positive. It was cut, so I reconnected it and it rolled
over in forward and reverse.
Wiring the relay was easy.
Terminal 87 goes to white wire attached to key switch
Terminal 30 goes to red/w wire attaches to the battery +
Terminal 86 goes to white wire attached to pedal switch
Terminal 85 goes to black wire attached to ground -.

I did connect the two white wires and it worked, but I added
the relay anyway since it was originally there.

That relay was added in the cars mostly for the electrics but Yamaha Techs thought it would also work for the gas carts. The relay is a delayed on and off switch to stop the solenoids from clicking all the time with the drivers foot tapping on the accelerator. The constant tapping was arcing the solenoid contacts and causing early failure of the unit. The "delay relay", as it was called, stopped the problem. You can wire the two white wires together but it will affect the charging level of your cart because part of the function of the relay creates a shorter charging path back to the battery. A better place to rewire those two wires is up by the micro switch inside of the wiring harness, thereby eliminating the added resistance of those long wires.

If I connect the 2 white wires what do I do with the ground an red /w white stripe wire pos to battery and ground to battery..
