EZGO Restoration Project - NEED HELP

I have bought an old 1983 EZGO gold cart. It is three-wheeled and has a sheet-metal body.

I have a few questions, first, I cannot afford the $450 for six golf cart batteries, I was thinking about using 3 12V deep cycle batteries instead, will this work? I know it will have reduced run time, but will it affect the motor at all?

Second, can I run more than 36V on the motor without damaging it, say 4 12V batteries. How many volts can u run before it starts wearing the motor down? What would be a safe voltage for full-throttle use weekendly for running around and having fun?

Third, I need parts, all the old parts are useless, broken and corroded. Here is a critical list, please help:
-Full Wiring Kit
-Double Wide Micro Switch For The F&R
-3-Position Key Switch
-Complete accelerator assembly (with solenoid and wiring) (heavy duty solenoid proferred)
-Tan Seat Back Assembly
-Tan Seat Bottom Assembly
-Tires
-36V Battery Charger
-Brake Assembly
-Headlights / Tailights

The wiper board(speed control) you can buy new contacts and wiper theres no need to buy the whole board, did you check the wiring before you tried to drive it?Maybe thats why the batteries blew up.You will see my comment on the first video, if your gonna put some money into a cart try to find a 4 wheeled one.3 wheeled isnt bad but if you looking for serious speed you might want a 4 wheeled.

Thanks!!! I looked at it, and buying a new speed control board is cheaper than buying the contacts and solenoid seperate, besides, its in REALLY bad condition... no exaggeration... THANKS FOR WATCHIING MY VIDS!!!

It will work, the problem is you'll end up killing the batteries in a matter of months. Their not made as good as cart batteries and your run time won't be sh*t which will cause you to run the batteries till their completely drained (something your not supose to be doing). This will cause premature failure of the batteries. you would be so much ahead to get a set of "Golf Cart" batteries

This would work better as far as battery life and run time. The motor should handle the extra volts with no problems. You will need a 48v solenoid to make this work also the charger is going to cost more and 4 good deep cycle batteries will cost the piss out of ya. Just get the "Golf Cart" batteries, it will save you from having to buy a set in 6 months
The reason there are 3 wheel carts is because of they have a better turning radius than the 4 wheel one, age has little to do with it. simply put, you can get a 3 wheel cart into more places than you can a 4 wheel one. this is why they're so well suited for industrial work.
Nice vids and remember you can always take the running gear and batts and stick them in a different cart down the road if you decide you want a 4 wheel one.

Picture this,,
Sitting on my cart, on the side of the floor with the motor in my lap,, Got all the jumpers hooked up right and touched the hot cable from the 4 batteries to the last post,
:shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock:
THOSE LITTLE MOTORS HAVE SOME SERIOUS TORQUE WHEN LAYING IN YOUR LAP :lol: :lol: :lol:
Motor jumped out of my lap and hit the ground and I about ruined the inside of my Wranglers.!! I think my motor is good.........

Now you have a f'n clue why the instructions say DO NOT RUN MOTOR WITH THE FRONT SHAFT UNSUPPORTED! Think about it. That "little" motor will propel a 800-900 pound golf cart 12-14 mph. Be careful. :wink:

Thanks!!! yeah, I noticed how wierd the 3-wheeler turns, you have to turn the wheel like 3 times over, LOL, my friend allmost flipped it while it was rolling downhill because he turned the wheel all the way. Thanks for the help with the batteries, I really appreciate it!!!

LOL, oooooooh, thats what it meant... WHY would you ever disconnect the motor from the drivetrain and RUN it??? WHY!?! LOL, I thought it meant running it with the wheels off the ground or something, lol... THANKS!

Do any of you guys know where I could get a 36V charger on the cheap? it doesn't have to be fast, I just can't spend the 200somethin on a charger? Does anyone have alternative ways? (I tried charging two at a time with a car charger, and well, BOOOOOOM!!!)

Motorider, MY advice is don't go cheap on the charger unless you can find a deal on one that puts out 21 amps. There are a lot of em put out 17 - 18 amps and they are okaay. But do not fully charge as 21 does. Beware of Power Wise 12 amp and the like...remember 'it all about AMPS' .....Good Luck :thumbup:
