G1 running concerns

hey guys(and girls if applicable) im new here but have been reading for a couple weeks and have put to practice alot of your good advice. my cart was given to me by my father, it was in poor shape but with some tlc to get clutches to move, a power kit and new helix from plowmans and pretty much cleaning of everything from top to bottom and it runs good. my question is this the top speed i have observed with handheld gps is 15mph on a 1 mile flat highway. it starts and runs good no issuses, fuel pump pulse is good and carb has been thoroughly cleaned. I'm in no way expecting nascar peformance but i hear of governor bypassed stock g1's running 20's at least but 15 is my max, and ideas where to start tinkering? i also notice that the last 1/4 throttle pedal seems to have little to no effect to overall speed/engine note. i have throttle adjusted to start cranking engine at proper time and move butterfly to WOT so i believe range of motion on cable is good(i feel like), ido intend to bbq pipe but will that really rob that much mph?

just for the heck of it this is a little about me, i'm very mechanically inclined. my father and i run a transmission shop in northern nc and i really enjoy anything i can tinker with, heres a littleof my shop and toys,

Toys is right, looks like fun for sure! Welcome to the site.

Far as the G1 one thing to check is take a marker and mark inside up to edge on both clutches, then run it fast and see if the belt took the marker off all the way to top of engine clutch (primary). I hope you cleaned and lubed the clutches when you did the spring/etc. they get all dry and dirty over the years. The belt is no good at 1" wide. The muffler can get plugged up, if you run it hard for 15min they will start to smoke keep running it flooring it a lot and smoke will stop....that is oil burning out of muffler. What happens is it gets old and dried up and it will not burn out, then you have to BBQ it. I had one I stuck a screwdriver up the exhaust and it unplugged it. It collects from short trips. Another thing is low compression, likely you know when a 2 stroke gets worn it loses a lot of power via blowby. You can check that. Usually gets worse when hot. Crank seals go on these but present running issues like need choke to start all the time and run bad at low rpm. Make sure the motor mounts are ok the engine can't move towards the trans. Beyond that you can get into engine things you can tweak like advancing the timing and cutting the head. But if it all working right it should get some pretty good rpm on the road WOT assuming you disabled the governor. I had one that did 30 with a cut head and other things.

thanks for the reply, i did clean and properly lube both clutches and shafts and new plowmans belt, i will post video wheni can of clutch operation because i'm just not sure if it's correct. the compression reading i got was around a hundred if i recall correctly but that was still relatively cool engine temp. it does smoke when run to the point of hot but has declined in the amount of smoke as the amount of times i take it out increases. what is ideal compression and at what time during heat cycle shuld i check it ? also i feel the cart shifts fast but then again i've never owned one like this (have a ezgo trike electric but in need of tlc also :( ) to know excatly.

and fyi to help understand where i'm at and what has been done to cart, i have new plug, air filter, fuel filter, fresh gas premix, new lines, rebuilt carb, rebuilt fuel pump, all covers were taken off and trash/debris removed from inside them, exhaust flap on a spring to hold open, i shimmed the drive clutch spring and new complete driven clutch assembly (plowmans) with red spring, c clip eliminator and brand new helix with ramps. what is proper base tune on carb screws? i search and found one that i set it to but dont remember what it was now. it's on stock tires and suspension

thanks, from my reading you seem to be a very trusted source of info, care to give your two coppers? (hope this sounds in text the way i really mean it,no sarcasm intended lol)

Re: G1 running concerns

You set the idle mixture at 1.25 turns out up to 1.5 turns. Basically rich enough to make it miss some and start fast. Set the idle speed right at top of carb so it idles when you just put your foot on pedal, you should have about 1" at top of pedal free play from when the switch starts it to when the carb starts to open. In that area it should idle slowly just faster than the starter spins it. If you have not defeated the governor you will not get top speed.

If it starts smoking more than the normal minimal 2 stroke smoke, you should keep running it hard, if the muffler burns out it will smoke a lot and you want that. Keep running it until it stops. Some will make a huge cloud and others don't. When the smoke goes back to minimal then drive around easy and let it cool the muffler off before you park it. It should not smoke more than minimal amount after that no matter what you do.

could lean mix make it lose mph with giving drivabillity issuses?

Re: G1 running concerns

Lean can make a 2 stroke bog some, its a bad idea because 2 strokes blow up when run lean. But this cart engine is pretty docile not likely to happen. Lean it usually will bog then take off, will run real smooth at part/low throttle where it should be missing and may surge. But lean is usually bog or bog initially then run fast, there is a line. Proper would be no bog and runs fast. Rich is misses a lot except at full throttle. A 2 stroke will actually run fastest lean but since fuel cools the piston they can melt a piston. Again a cart engine is low power so its not going to melt a piston very easily. A sled will do it in a heartbeat at WOT.

If the carb is clean and good fuel flow and airbox is together right, you should never have to change stock jetting.
