In Dash Stereo Alternative
 

So I want to instal a stereo in the Precedent. I don't want an overhead and the dash really isn't well suited. Has anyone ever just mounted speaker and an amp for an Ipod/mp3 player? I'd like to just have a plug that would go direct from the mp3 to the amp to the speakers. It has an FM radio, plenty of song storage and can take it out/off easily.

Any takers?

Why don't you just install something like this in your cart? See picture, Even though it is 110v all you would need to do is get a 48v to 12v reducer and then a small 12v to 110v inverter, would be really easy. I have that model and it runs on batteries as well. Sounds incredibly good too.

That is what we have been doing on alot of our yachts, cruisers, and offshore boats for stereo systems.

We use a water proof bracket that holds MP3 player and then install MP3 plug on dash that has a rubber cap. After this the rigger installs amp with enough power to drive however many speakers customer requests.
The only other thing you need is a waterproof on/off switch installed next to MP3 plug so you can turn amp on or off.
This setup sounds great and because of it's simplicity and few "moving" parts it seems to hold up extremly well in harsh conditions.

I have a nice pair of 6.5" speakers by Polk Audio and I have a BOSS Marine Mosfet amp. I pulled the body today and I can get the speakers in the kick panel, on either side of the f/r switch with a little work. For the amp, I have ordered one of those under seat storage trays and the amp will go there with plugs for easy removal when washing etc.

The remote for the Craig mp3 player ( or one of our iPods) I plan to use wull work through the glove box as I tried this today. I have a carbon fiber dash insert with two side compartment doors and one center locking door. In the drivers side comparment is where I'd like to mount the dock, or whatever it is I use.

Edited to add: My youngest Son (10) just gave me another option, I have a Sirus Stilleto mp3/sat radio. Route me an antenna through the roof frame and find a preamp or whatever I need. This has the 1/8 audio line output like most mp3's have.

The Sirius radio option is not a bad idea but I still would pick MP3 over sat radio due to cost, choosing your music and simplicity.

Salt shaker, wher would we look to get the plug to attach to the amp? This sonds like a great idea to eliminate a stereo. It would save dash room, and be easilt removed. If anyone knows where to get this pleg please let us know.

I put a mp3 player in my cart, I used some extra computer speakers I had and a inverter 80 watt from big lots $ 15 and put a 12v cigarette lighter in the cart, pluged the inverter in the lighter and the speakers in the inverter and pluged my speakers in to my mp3 player sounds great it was cheap to do --just my 2 cents

Hey guys, I did a little google searching on this subject and this is what I found http://madmariner.com/blogs/navagear/32743
They have reviews of a few units, most of which are reasonably priced ($180-$300) when you consider what you would pay for a new reciever, and probably a waterproof mount for it. I, myself, am going to consider strongly getting one of these units. I think that this is something that can easily moved from buggie to buggie as you upgrade. No head unit to pull leaving a gaping hole. One of the units is also designed to draw very little juice. Perfect for us carters. Hope this helps everyone.

You can get new Pyle Marine stereo units, with speakers and water proof housings for under a $100 on ebay, I've recently put one of these in and they are quality. This one is right at $100, but I've seen this exact unit lower than that. This is what I put in a customers cart.
